Are mixed breed dogs healthier and live longer than purebreds?

Very interesting question! Crossbred dogs often avoid many of the health conditions which may be associated with their respective pedigree breeds and so are often considered 'healthier'. Breeding is not an exact science however and the genetics of breeding two 50:50 crossbred dogs together could result in a wide range of pups from close to 100% either breed to 50-50 of the mixture!

I’m so sorry you lost both parents - cancer sucks! Golden Retrievers do seem to be a little more likely to develop certain types of cancers than other dogs (particularly lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma), but keep in mind any dog can develop cancer at any time. If you love Golden Retrievers, get one! Otherwise I think a mixed breed might be your best bet to avoid hereditary cancers.

Honestly a mixed breed dog will be healthiest. Purebred dogs will be susceptible to genetic diseases, and due to this, some breeds like Pugs have big health problems like allergies, brachycephalic disease, and eye problems. Because mix breeds have a mixture of genetics, the risk of disease are lower. I would personally choose a mix breed small dog. I hope this helps!

Small dogs can live up to 15 years of age, with some dogs living up to 18 or even 20. It truly depends on any underlying health conditions and how they are managed. In general, mixed breed dogs tend to be somewhat less susceptible to hereditary conditions. However, maltese can be predisposed to heart conditions such as valve abnormalities, ocular conditions such as glaucoma, and allergies. Terriers are a very broad category of breeds, but typically have the same predispositions. Please note that just because a dog is predisposed to something, does not mean that it will have the condition at any point in life. This can certainly be a hot button topic for many dog lovers! :) Personally, I know quite a few lovely goldendoodles and don't have any particular ethical problems with buying one as long as the breeder is doing his/her due diligence - screening the parents for health problems like hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary eye problems, heart issues, etc. Just like getting a purebred puppy, make sure to do your homework and only buy from a responsible breeder with healthy, good-natured dogs. As long as you do that, I don't see any problem with it at all.

However, generally both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be good dogs for large families. In terms of possible health issues, it is the same thing, it is hard to predict how a mixed breed dog is going to turn out. However, both Shepherd type dogs and Labradors tend to be more prone to issues like hip dysphasia, cancer, laryngeal paralysis, among some other conditions. Good luck and have a great day! Hello. It’s so nice of you to help him. He is not a Golden Retriever. He is a mixed breed. He may have some Golden Retriever mixed in with several other breeds, but he is definitely not a pure bred Golden. Best of luck to you with your new addition.
