My dog breathes hard and shakes when lying down. What's wrong?

If you think Eli is having breathing difficulties, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The vet can listen to her lungs and obtain chest x-rays to help diagnose what the problem might be. She may have a respiratory infection and need an antibiotic for treatment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hugo! If Hugo is having trouble breathing this is an emergency and he should be evaluated by a Vet as soon as possible. When dogs can not breathe they tend to not relax and lie down. Or when they lie down they extend their necks and/or abduct their elbows. Causes of trouble breathing: congestive heart failure, anemia (bleeding some where), pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection, fluid around the lungs or heart, pain, or cancer. I am glad Hugo is eating and drinking. I would call your Vet to have him examined and X-rays of his chest to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps and I wish Hugo a speedy recovery!

However, if this continues, other possibilities like a respiratory condition should be considered. I recommend that you have Peaches evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Inappetence could be due to this or in reality it could be that she has another condition also causing her not to eat such as pancreatitis for example. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Poor guy. Unfortunately, lethargy and shaking can be caused by a number of conditions including: toxin ingestion, severe anemia, sepsis (infection in the bloodstream), an electrolyte imbalance, or a neurological condition just to name a few. If Rocky is acating abnormal in this way and doesn't seem to be snapping out of it for more than 30 mins or so, then its best to take him to your local ER vet for further evaluation. Please also check his gum color to ensure they are still nice and pink. Pale gums are cause for an immediate vet visit wtihout waiting for the pet to improve. I do hope that Rocky's condition imrpoves soon! Best of luck and take care.
