Could my chihuahua have a bowel obstruction after eating plastic?

Since she is exhibiting some signs of eating foreign material, it is very important at this point to make sure that she is not obstructed as that will require therapy. I would highly recommend you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check on this with abdominal radiographs and proceed with therapy accordingly. Keep in mind that in some cases of an obstruction, surgery is necessary and the sooner it is diagnosed, the better the outcome tends to be. Have a good day!

An obstruction is a very serious problem and typically requires surgery to relieve. So if he is not acting back to normal, he will need imaging by a veterinarian. Even if x-rays were taken initially, it is worth repeating them given the foreign object seen in the stool. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hachi! He is so cute! If Hachi ate the one the black buttons on the bottom it could be stuck in his intestines. He is a small dog. The only way to know if it is stuck requiring surgery is to take him to the Emergency hospital for an exam and belly X-rays. If he has an obstruction, time is of the essence and he should have it removed as soon as possible, meaning today versus tomorrow. Other causes of vomiting are possible: parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food allergy or intolerance, etc. I hope this helps and I wish Hachi the best!!

If the vomiting continues than he could have a blockage. If he is otherwise acting ok than you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boil chicken and white rice. If the vomiting resolves, continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then gradually switch back to his regular food. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then he needs to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause. Your veterinarian can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem.

If you see any of these symptoms in the next 24-48hrs, you should take Rayne to your local vets as an emergency. However, if she chewed the plastic into small pieces, most likely she will pass it with her stools and she will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

You can monitor her closely for signs consistent with a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, nausea, inappetence and abdominal pain. It's great she is pooping, even if it's small amounts, plus she is her normal self. I'd be concerned if she had diarrhea, wasn't pooping at all, had blood in her feces, wasn't eating, and/or was very lethargic. I would continue to monitor her to be safe. Best of luck.
