My dog was born deaf. Are hearing aids a viable option for her?

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Female | 33 lbs

Vivi was born deaf. And I came across some articles saying that hearing aids for dogs exist. Now, where I'm from, there are no diagnostic tests etc for hearing (for animals), let alone assisstive devices. (I'm from India). So I wanted to know if hearing aids could be a viable option, if I wanted to pursue it. As far as I could tell, she seems to be profoundly deaf, very very rarely startling to extremely loud noises. (I'm no professional, but I myself am profoundly deaf, so I took a guess)

There are hearing aids for dogs, but they are rarely used. This is likely because dogs do just fine deaf, and can learn sign language to follow commands. You can ask around your area to see if there are vets who may use hearing aids. Best of luck.

I will say though that testing during puppyhood is difficult because puppies haven’t learned how to react to things yet. I’d say there is a slim chance she can hear. Yes absolutely, there is a hearing test called the BAER hearing test for pets. Typically it is offered at some veterinary colleges and also some internal specialists. I would check with your regular vet to see if they have some referrals for Peanut in the area. Other than that you can try snapping your fingers on either side of her head to see if she responds. Can I train a 5-week-old deaf Aussie puppy with other dogs at home?

Absolutely! Deaf dogs are relatively easy to train with basic commands, but you need to be consistent with your hand signals. Your other dogs will also likley learn the hand signals, so it will be good training for them as well. My senior dog is hard of hearing. Are there treatments or devices?

If this is related to an ear infection, then yes, treatments can help. If this is related to Mitchell's age, then unfortunately, there is not treatment available. Can dogs be born deaf, or do they become deaf later in life?

Some dogs are born deaf, either due to a genetic mutation or malformation of the hearing apparatus. There are other dogs who can become deaf over time, due to damage to the ear drum, damage to certain cells within the ear, or chronic treatment with certain medications. How can I test my puppy's hearing at home to see if they're deaf?

The best way to "test" hearing at home is to wait until the dog is sleeping or not looking at you and then making a loud noise to see if she responds. This is not really diagnostic though. Some animals are deaf at only certain pitches of sound and not all sounds. The only way to definitively test is to take her for Baer testing at a speciality vet clinic.
