My German Shepherd has bloody, slimy poop. What should I do?

Diarrhea with blood can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Blood in the stool makes it a more serious condition and does warrant an evaluation. I recommend that you have Karma evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Nelson isn't feeling well. Unfortunately, I do not see any pictures attached, so I cannot comment on the appearance of Nelson's stool. However, it is very concerning that he has had black and bloody stool. This could be a result of gastrointestinal ulceration, parvovirus, a severe burden of intestinal parasites (hookworms in particular), or exposure to some types of rat poison. It is possible that he could have sticks in his stool if he had ingested some, or it could be intestinal worms. At this point, I strongly recommend taking Nelson to his vet for a physical exam and fecal flotation test to check for the presence of parasites. From there, his vet will be able to determine the best course of treatment. Left untreated, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract can be quite severe, particularly in young puppies. Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. I hate to hear that Precious have you a scare! Blood in the stool can be due to many things including worms, giardia, eating something she shouldn’t have and bacterial over growth. It can also be due to more serious conditions like organ dysfunction, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. The mucus can signify irritation as well and it has the same causes as the blood. That was smart to take her in yesterday. Make sure to give her all the medications and monitor her stool closely. If you continue to see blood or soft stool, have her re-examined and discuss next steps diagnostic wise. Make sure that she eats and drinks well and has a good energy level. Yes, I would take Kia and her puppies into the vet for this blood in Kia's poop. Bloody poop isn't normal, and it should be checked out promptly. This is especially important for a nursing mother, as her health is vital to the wellbeing of her puppies. I hope this helps!

The law requires a valid veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship to do so which requires the Veterinarian to actually examine your pet. On Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach we can provide guidance, ideas on causes of illness and support but can not diagnose nor provide drugs. The blood from Sherry's anus, is that from his stool or is there a problem with his anal tissue? German Shepherds can suffer from perineal fistulas which are very painful. Blood in the stool is common in dogs suffering from stomach upset due to inflammation within the colon. If you are able, clean his anus and take a picture if you think it looks abnormal and I can try to help you better. I would fast Sherry for 12-24 hours to rest his GI tract. Then start feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed this diet until he passes 2 normal stools then transition him back to his normal dog food. If the stool doesn't improve, he won't eat, or starts vomiting he needs an exam by a Vet. I hope this helps and feel free to post a picture of his anus if it looks abnormal. Bright red blood in the stool is typically due to inflammation in the colon. This can be due to parasites, but there are other causes as well. This bleeding allows intestinal bacteria access to the bloodstream. This can have serious consequences. For this reason, she may require an antibiotic in addition to deworming treatment based on results of fecal testing. I hope this information helps!
