My dog has bloody poop and isn't eating. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Dog | Brittany | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 28.7 lbs

My dog pooped earlier and it came out looking red like it was bloody. She has also been very weird about eating her kibble. Some days she will eat and sometimes she will go a couple days. Should I be concerned?

This behavior is suspicious for not feeling well and blood in the stool further supports that. I recommend to take in a sample of the stool for testing and have Lacey checked for parasites or an infection. Based upon the physical exam and the medical history, the doctor may recommend other diagnostics as well. In the meantime feed her a bland diet as this can help to relieve inflammation in the gut. Poor Pug! Given that she may have some blood in her poop, yes I would get her into the vet soon. Blood in the poop should always be checked out by a vet right away. Until you get her into the vet, feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have not tried a low fat GI food I would consider switching the food to something like Hills I/D and see if this resolves the bloody stool. I would also recommend adding in a probiotics such as Purina fortiflora. If there is no improvement or the blood worsens, I would have Sammie examined by a veterinarian. I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound and blood panel to ensure everything is functioning norm

Lacey needs to be seen by veterinarian immediately. This could indicate a severe case of colitis or gastritis, a severe infection, a foreign body, internal bleeding or even something as serious as parvovirus. Dogs can get very dehydrated from this and have secondary issues with her kidneys and liver. Do not give her anything to eat or medication until she is seen by a veterinarian.

Why is my dog having bloody diarrhea and not eating for several days?

Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

My dog has bloody poop but seems okay. Is it from eating too much?

I'm sorry that Azazel isn't feeling well! Bloody stools in a young dog can be caused by IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, or much less commonly a growth or trauma. Eating a large amount of his normal food would not, by itself, cause bloody stools. If his stool looks like raspberry jam, I would recommend taking him to the vet or an emergency clinic right away. If there are just streaks of blood on the outside of his bowel movements, and he's actually totally normal (eating, drinking, good energy, has pink gums) it's not an emergency just yet. In that case, I would recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and giving him a day to see if it resolves. If after a second day (so 48 hours total) he's still have blood stool or is having diarrhea, it would be wise to have him checked out at your regular vet. Bring a fresh stool sample to any vet you end up seeing so they can check him for intestinal parasites. Wishing you and Azazel the best of luck! My dog with congested heart failure has bloody stool. Is she dying?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry about Lacey's heart disease and your concerns! I don't think Lacey is currently dying! Bloody diarrhea is a sign of colitis or inflammation of the colon. I would call your Vet Monday and see if they will prescribe a probiotic and metronidazole. You can also ask if blood stool is a side effect of her medications. Start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs until 2 day of normal stool. My dog has bloody poop. When should I call the vet and what to do?

I recommend to call your veterinarian today. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. Why does my dog have bloody diarrhea after eating a steak bone?

Hi! Dogs do sometimes get a little blood in their stool when they are having diarrhea. Sometimes this is just due to the straining (to produce the diarrhea!) But, we do usually recommend having a pet checked out when bleeding occurs, especially in Lucky's case, due to the history of eating a steak bone. Your vet could examine him, possibly take an Xray, and might be able to prescribe some medications to help ease the diarrhea! Best of luck!
