My dog's fresh bloody poop after amoebiasis treatment. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 61 lbs

Hello, my dog just recently got out of a hospital due to amoebasis. The vet gave her 2 kinds of antibiotics to be consumed in time intervals until oct 11. Just yesterday, we noticed fresh red blood in her poop. Is this something to worry about? Thanks

Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. Amoebiasis can cause bloody stools on its own, additionally, antibiotic administration may cause diarrhea as well. It could be that she will continue to have mild GI sings for a few more days while she is treated for her disease. If you note that the blood in the stools is getting worse I would recommend having her re-evaluated. Otherwise, if the blood in stool is improving then you don't have to bring her back to your veterinarian.

Hope this helps and best of luck.
