My dog has bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and is lethargic. Vet or home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

Roxy, Miniature Schnauzer 11 years old, has for three days now experienced diareahh, vomiting and low energy. Drinking lots of water but appetite not there since she has tried to eat but cannot keep it down. Noticed what seemed to be blood in her diarreah. Is there any home remedies I can try before considering taking her to a vet?

I would recommend taking Roxy to the vet today. Schnauzers are a breed prone to developing Addison's disease, which could be life-threatening if left untreated. Another possible cause could be hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which can also cause death. There are a few other causes, including pancreatitis and diabetes, and routine blood work should be able to determine if this may be the case.
