My dog has bloody diarrhea with mucus and is acting weird. What to do?

Unfortunately there is no picture attached to your post, so I can't see what his poop looks like. Cats can easily get stressed, and that can lead to colitis. Colitis is inflammation of the colon, and that can cause blood in the stool. I'd keep an eye on him and his poop for now. If it continues to be bloody, give his vet a call. As for what happened with the vet, I suspect they may have used a cotton swab to get a sample of poop from his anus. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To treat diarrhea I recommend fast Otis for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water unless vomiting. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per day until 2 days of normal stools. If the diarrhea doesn't improve he should be seen by your Vet. As for the bleeding butt-I would need more information. If you mean there is blood in the stool then the above may help. But if there is blood in the stool Otis ideally needs antibiotics which you can get from your Vet. If there is a wound on his butt or near his butt then he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps

I am very sorry to hear that your dogs are experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor them at home. Rest their gastrointestinal tracts by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhea. If they do not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhea, you notice fresh blood, they seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. If you are sure the bloody mucous is coming from Daisy's anal glands then it is likely she has an anal gland infection. Usually these require veterinary care to treat so if you continue to see blood you should have Daisy examined by a veterinarian. Antibiotics and an anal gland flushing may be necessary to treat. You can try offering Daisy some canned pumpkin to soften her stool a bit and make passing stool less uncomfortable and use an ecollar to prevent licking. The most common cause of this is gastrointestinal infection but it also may be due to scavenging, intoxication, bleeding ulcer, low platelet count and more. Please, take Jersey to your local vets for a check. He definitely will need a few days of antibiotics but prior to this, your vet will possibly recommend a blood test or ultrasound scan to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Miki! Blood in the diarrhea indicates inflammation with in the colon. It isn't uncommon for a dog with severe diarrhea or diarrhea for a few days to develop blood in the stool. The blood can cause significant dehydration so it is important to make sure he isn't very lethargic and it drinking. If the diarrhea is severe (accidents in the house, can't hold it and asking to go out often) then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water. This will allow his GI tract to calm down. Then restart feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he is very lethargic, starts vomiting and will not eat or drink he should be seen by a Vet today. Otherwise you can do the above and have him seen, if needed, by your Vet when they open. I am very sorry to hear that Honor is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, diarrhea which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Honor has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed these episodes over a few hours I would continue to monitor Honor at home. Start by resting his gastrointestinal tract for a few hours. Then Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. If the episodes continue into the evening, if Honor becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Honor to see his vet.
