My dog had bloody diarrhea, now better. Should I still see the vet?

Hello. If your dog is eating & drinking well, not lethargic, not showing signs of abdominal pain & not vomiting, this is not an emergency. But it probably would be a good idea to have him seen, or at least have a stool sample looked at early next week. If you could get an appointment to be seen today that would be great, but if Prince is otherwise feeling well, you can watch this for another day or so. Hope he is doing well soon. When there is blood in the stool I do become a little more concerned. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however I would still recommend an examination with a veterinarian tomorrow. That being said if he had a very bloody stool tonight, one that looks like raspberry jam, then he should be seen immediately. If he is developing a problem called HGE they can get very sick very quickly. If he starts vomiting that also increases my concern. I hope he improves quick.

It sounds and looks as Marvel is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Blood in the feces can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. If this continues, I recommend that you have Sami evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I recommend to call your veterinarian today. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. If she is otherwise acting fine than you could monitor her for another day. Withhold food today and then feed her some boiled chicken and white rice for a few days. If the diarrhea resolves than you can gradually switch her back to her normal food. If she starts vomiting, the diarrhea persists, or she becomes lethargic and she needs to be examined by a vet for treatment.

Oh no poor guy. As long as he isn't lethargic, doesn't have pale gums or is otherwise stable, you can wait the 5 hrs to get him seen. He may be having a stress colitis, in which case antibiotics and probiotics along with a bland diet are the treatment recommendations.
