Dog has bloody diarrhea after Benadryl. Should I see an emergency vet?

I'm not sure why you gave Buddy Benadryl. That's for allergic reactions in dogs, not vomiting and bloody diarrhea. He sounds very sick, and it's extremely serious he can't even keep down water. He has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

It sounds as Dahlia is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Hi ! If the amount of fresh blood is little I would not recommend an emergency check up. Fresh blood is probably coming from the lower intestine, most likely the colon or from around the anus where these is some irritation from the diarrhoea. I would recommend a bland diet of chicken and rice , or fish and rice or Hill's GI prescription food and a good probiotic. Diarrhoea should settle in a few days, but if Val is not eating or she seems to pass a lot of diarrhoea, or if the blood increases, I would recommend a vet check up. Hope this helps !

This problem is likely to be related to a colitis (inflammation of the last part of the intestine). It is quite common and usually dietary related. It is nothing to be extremely worried about unless signs of lethargy and vomiting are noticed. Hydration is usually not an big concern at this stage as there may be a mild dehydration but not clinically significant at this stage. I would keep an eye on him, and even offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to see if it helps if his symptoms have only been minor/happened once or twice. Reddish blood in the stool can indicate irritation of the lower GI tract, or even issues such as parasites. If Sparrow continues to have bloody stool, diarrhea, vomits more, is very lethargic or painful, or refuses to eat anything, it would be best to bring him into a vet for a complete workup.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Chyna's care. Loose stools is not a typical sign of an allergic reaction though anything is possible when that occurs. Also, it could have been secondary to the Benadryl though not typical or just dietary indiscretion from eating something else. Just continue to keep an eye on her for now. Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.
