Why is my dachshund's stomach bloated and painful after eating steak?

Bella needs to see the veterinarian today. Signs like this are never normal and can indicate many things. Especially being a Dachshund, there is a concern she has injured her back, has a compressed disc or has a protruding disc. Other causes are also possible. Injuries to the back can become serious quickly and can lead to paralysis. A physical exam and radiographs needed to begin figuring out the cause and the best treatment. Other diagnostics may also be indicated. She needs strict activity restriction so no running, jumping, walks, playing or stairs. Best of luck.

First off, I'm so sorry you had to put your cat to sleep tonight. I did this recently with both a cat and dog, and completely understand the pain you are in. Given that Daphne ate her dinner fine, she may just have stomach upset. Keep an eye on her tonight and if she has diarrhea in the morning and still appears bloated, have her seen by a vet. Poor Coco! That much distension in the stomach can indicate fluid (ascites) in the abdomen or an enlarged abdominal organ like the liver. These problems can develop secondary to heart disease, liver failure, low protein levels, severe GI parasites, and cancer. I'd recommend taking Coco to see a veterinarian right away as he needs blood work and X-rays to know why this is happening. This is a true medical emergency as many of the causes of a distended stomach can be life threatening. While the cause of her stiff stomach may not be bloat, there are other conditions that can cause this symptom, like pain, an obstruction, or internal bleeding. I certainly hope that this isn't the case, but the fact that she's not eating, acting painful, and has a firm stomach suggests that something is seriously wrong. At the vet, they will give her a physical, and most likely they will want to take x-rays of her stomach. They may also recommend bloodwork, depending on how her physical exam and x-rays look. It does not sound like GDV to me. I'm concerned it has to do with Yezler's heart failure. Fluid back up from heart failure can lead to an enlarged stomach due to fluid collecting in that area. I would take him into a vet now to get this checked out. I recommend an echocardiogram and a discussion about medication for his heart disease. Please take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Dietary indiscretion, eating things they shouldn't, can cause stomach and intestinal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is painful. If there was a bone with in the steak then yes, that could be why he is experiencing abdominal pain. When dogs experience pain their behavior can be very odd: run around like something bit them, clingy, doing the downward dog or prayer position, act lethargic, shake, pant. The best thing for D, since he is showing signs of pain, is to have him seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They may wan to take belly X-rays to be sure the bone is breaking down and isn't stuck. Otherwise I would fast him for 12 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or starts vomiting he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish D the very best!
