My dog is bleeding after pups, ate rat bait. Can I give Vitamin K?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 10 months old

Hi our jack Russell has had pups on 13th December. She’s bleeding from the vulva and although I’ve read this is normal for up to 12 weeks after pups, she’s had pups previously and this hasn’t occurred. She has however eaten mice and rats that have been baited (we use Tom Cat bait) and although we’ve managed to get many from her I’m worried she’s got a mild anticoagulant poisoning. Can I give her vitamin k1 to treat this safely?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jade!

I would have her seen by a Vet first. They can check her PT/PTT and be sure she isn't anemic and in need of a blood transfusion if you think an anticoagulant rodenticide has been ingested. The antidote is Vit K. Other causes of vaginal bleeding are an infected uterus (pyometra) which is a surgical emergency. We can not prescribe drugs or dosing because legally we would need to examine the pet first.

I hope this helps and I wish Jade the very best!
