My female dog won't stop bleeding after mating. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on your pictures I wouldn't call it heavy bleeding. Dogs mate when the female is in heat (during bleeding). Breeding may have triggered some blood that had been pooling. I wouldn't worry unless it continues or she is lethargic. But yes, she can still get pregnant. Good luck!

If Bambam is still bleeding, I would suspect she is pregnant. It's not normal to be bleeding this long after being mated. You can have her seen by a vet to confirm if she is pregnant or not. I would also strongly urge you to spay her either now if she i's pregnant, or after she weans this litter should she be pregnant. Dogs over the age of five should never be bred. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! On average during a dogs heat, they bleed for 10 days but it can be 2-4 weeks as well. Any bleeding past 4 weeks, or if Cherri is acting sick, is concerning and she should see a Vet for an infected uterus (pyometra). It sounds like Cherri bled for about 21 days? If she has stopped I am hoping she is now out of heat. You can do an ultrasound around 30 days from breeding to check for fetal heart beats or take an X-ray at day 50 to look for mineralized skeletons to confirm if she is pregnant. Yes, this can be due to a problem in her uterus. It could normal but since it’s been so long since she bled before there could be an infection or mass in the uterus or vagina. I recommend an exam and they may want to do an X-ray to make sure her uterus is normal size. I do recommend spaying her if you can so they can remove and examine the uterus and prevent her from getting a uterine infection or cancer. Also unspayed females have a higher incidence of breast cancer so that’s another reason for having her spayed soon. Yes, mating does not affect the length of the heat cycle, so she may continue bleeding even after being bred. Dogs can mate several times within a heat cycle, and puppies can even be born with different dads within the same litter.
