My dog has blastomycosis. Is a new lip lesion a sign of spreading?

The incubation period is from 5 to 12 weeks. Some animals don't show clinical signs for a long time after being infected, but those animals are not contagious to other animals and people. Poor Hugo! Underlying causes of these types of cystic lesions can include allergies, foreign material lodged into tissue, and immune mediated conditions, all of which can become infected with bacteria and/or yeast. Hugo should be examined by his vet because he will likely need an antibiotic or antifungal medication either orally or as a topical foot soak.

Sounds like Ziggy needs to be evaluated by his veterinarian again and possibly a referral to a specialist such as a dermatologist or internal medicine specialist. Your vet may want to re evaluate him, do some more testing, change medicines, add medicines, etc. If your vet seems comfortable continuing to treat and you are comfortable then great but if you are doubtful about the situation, I would just mention that you are interested in going to a specialist or another veterinarian for a second consultation. Some cases cannot be handled appropriately by all of us in private practice and I would hope that most of us are quick to advise referrals to specialists when we cannot adequate resolve the problems that we see. Yes having the smaller abscess rupture and drain in normal. It's also ok to bathe Trae with a gentle dog medicated shampoo. I do not think the limping is due to the infection. Good morning, I can see on the picture the area of the skin that you seem to describe as fungus from the doctors opinion I can also see the redness on the lip that you visualize. I concur with the doctor that the hair loss might be a fungus. When it comes to the inflammation/redness on the lip. This could be a contact allergy. If you use plastic bowls for water and food, I would switch them to porcelain or stainless steel bowls. If not a contact allergy, you could also be dealing with food allergies for example. You could consult another veterinarian to get a second opinion or even see a very veterinary dermatologist. If you have changed Britney's food lately consider going back to the previous diet for several weeks and see if you see any improvemen. While dogs often have a fever with blastomycosis, not all dogs do. It's also possible for the fever to come and go. Hopefully you are waiting on some testing for blastomycosis that should give a definitive answer - if not ask your veterinarian about testing a urine sample.

Many yeast and or fungal infections can take a while to improve. Veterinarians often start with topical therapy and often that is all that is needed. However, if the area is larger, not improving, bleeding, or otherwise seems worse than sometimes oral anti fungal medications and sometimes a cone to keep them from licking are important nest steps.
