How to treat dog blackheads on jowls and lips when wipes don't work?

The contact time is very important or it won't work. The longer you can leave it, the better. It will take a few weeks before you notice much improvement. Once the comedones have resolved, you can continue using this shampoo for maintenance (like once every 10-14 days). Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From what you are describing these sound like comedones, or clogged pores. A comedone is similar to a pimple, in that it is a collection of oily material in a pore. It is black because of exposure to oxygen and accumulation of debris. Comedones may be a sign of a skin issue such as mites, or over-secretion of oils, but they can also be signs of an underlying hormonal disease such as Cushing's disease. As long as they are not irritating to your dog, there is no need to try to get rid of them. Comedones may be reduced by use of benzoyl peroxide shampoos, which have “follicular flushing action,” the ability to go down inside pores and hair follicles and remove foreign material. I recommend contacting your regular veterinarian who may recommend a medicated shampoo, and/or may recommend that your dog be seen for an exam and bloodwork to evaluate for any underlying diseases that may be related to his/her comedones. Dogs can get blackheads and clogged pores just like humans. Picking and squeezing them often lead to increased inflammation and can lead to infection so I recommend to leave them alone. There is not one easy solution to get rid of pore issues. You do want to improve skin health and this can be done by feeding a diet aimed at skin health and adding additional omega-3 fatty acids for dogs to the diet. The two diets I recommend for skin health are Royal Canin and Nutro. You are not likely to find an over-the-counter shampoo that can flush the pores but your veterinarian likely carries one like Peroxiderm. Lastly, your veterinarian will also carry medicated wipes that you can use on the area that are safe if Rhino happens to look at them, although you should prevent Rhino from licking these areas in general. This looks like a mild infection which is likely an extension of chin acne. This is usually treated with benzoyl peroxide wipes (i.e. Stridex pads) and oral antibiotics. Antihistamines are also often used to help resolve this and some pets requrire steroid thereapy to get this to subside. This is usually caused by a skin allergy which can be from something in then environment or a food allergy. Remove any plastic bowls from you home, since this seems to be a common irritant for chin acne. I hope that your pet Scooby's skin resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.

I hate to hear that! You can try applying just a dab of coconut oil and rubbing it in very well. In general, keeping her muzzle very clean and dry may help. If the lesions don't clear up significantly within a week or so, I recommend to have her seen by the veterinarian. Sometimes antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are needed. This looks like a bacterial and possibly yeast in his skin folds from his saliva. This is really common in larger dogs with large lip folds. You could try to use some medicated wipes like miconahex-triz wipes. If it isn't healing, then I would have your vet take a look at it. He will likely need some antibiotics and possibly an anti-fungal medicine to help this heal. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures I suspect what you are seeing are blackheads. I would recommend using a shampoo called Dermabenz to help remove these. You can find this shampoo online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resooved.
