Why does my dog have black, scabby bumps and hair loss on his head?

My dog has bumps on his head. When you move the hair,the root is black and scabby. It falls out and then there is soar.

Hello and thank you for your post! From what you are describing, it sounds as if Frankie may be dealing with a skin infection. There are multiple treatments for a skin infection. I would have your vet examine Frankie in order to determine which treatments are best for him. Frankie will most likely need a course of oral antibiotics and topical treatments to resolve this. This may also be a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis. This can lead to secondary skin infections as well. A different topical treatment is needed to treat this. Again, I would have your vet examine Frankie to determine what this is in order to start the most appropriate treatment. If you are unable to get to your vet to have him seen, you can at least start a shampoo called duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection resolves. If this appears at certain times of year, it could be related to a seasonal allergy. Another possibilities may be a parasitic infection of the skin such as mites. I would recommend Frankie see her veterinarian soon for a work up on this skin issue. Her veterinarian may start with a skin scraping to check for parasites and may place Frankie on antibiotics or other medications such as antihistamines or other drugs to help get the inflammation down and help the skin to heal. Food trials or allergy testing may be recommended later by your veterinarian depending on whether your vet thinks it is related to an allergy. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to PetCoach. I'm sorry to hear that Frisco is having these dermatologic issues. The most likely cause is the presence of ectoparasites, such as fleas, mites or lice. If he also has areas of raised pus-filled lesions, he also likely has a secondary bacterial infection. It sounds difficult to have Frisco seen by a veterinarian, but he would benefit greatly from an exam and a skin scrape, which is a test used to look for external parasites. Depending on what parasites are present, your vet can treat accordingly. Over-the-counter flea and tick medications are not safe or effective in dogs, and can sometimes be harmful. You may try to purchase chlorhexidine or other anti-bacterial/anti-fungal wipes online, which may help with any bacterial infection. https://www.chewy.com/douxo-chlorhexidine-3-ps-pads-dogs/dp/110823 However, if the underlying infection with mites, such as Demodex, is not addressed, the problem will continue. My dog is losing hair and has bumps. What's wrong with his skin?

Scrappy needs to go to your veterinarian for an exam and skin scraping to determine the cause of this skin condition. It looks like a bacterial infection but he also could have mites, a fungal infection or it could be an autoimmune disease or tumors. If it's a severe bacterial infection with antibiotics and medicated baths this should improve. The longer he has these lesions the more likely the skin can become damaged and his fur may not grow back in. In addition to the skin scraping they may recommend a thyroid level test and perhaps a blood panel to check for other underlying disease. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Penny. Skin disease is frustrating as many conditions can look the same. I would have a fungal culture performed to check for ringworm and skin scrapes to check for mites. If it isn't either of these, I would put her on antibiotics to treat for a dermatitis. I would also look down her ears canals to ensure she has not been scratching secondary to an ear infection. I hope this information helps and is a good starting point for you.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! Poor Dip! It looks quite uncomfortable for the little guy. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian. It appears to be what we call Demodex, which is a skin mite. This mite is typically picked up from the mom when they are puppies and because their immune system is not fully developed at this point, it can be difficult to keep these mites (which normally do not cause disease in an animal with a healthy and strong immune system) under control. Your vet will need to scrape the skin with an instrument or blade and look at the sample under the microscope to help confirm if this is from mites or not. The other possibility is that this could be a bacterial skin infection that needs an antibiotic and topical medications for treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! The rash you described: scaly, bumpy, scab like, could be a fungal infection or bacterial infection on the skin. Since at home treatments will likely not resolve this, it really is necessary to get the skin checked by your vet so they can do some quick skin testing to determine which infection is more likely so that the correct treatment is recommended to resolve Jimi's skin problem. Antibiotics or Anti-fungals will likely be recommended to treat this, which are also not available without a veterinarian prescription.

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
