Dog's head: black patch turned scabby bump. What could it be?

Poor Penny! Without seeing them, I cannot say for sure what it may be but good news is that she isn't overly irritated by it. To know for sure, I would have your vet take a look at them in person whenever she is having a flare up. It could just be dry skin, fly bites, or if it is black and really thick (doesn't sound like this), it could be vasculitis. You could try a small amount of coconut oil on the bumps or dry skin to help soothe them. Just be careful not to get it down in the canals. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for your post! From what you are describing, it sounds as if Frankie may be dealing with a skin infection. There are multiple treatments for a skin infection. I would have your vet examine Frankie in order to determine which treatments are best for him. Frankie will most likely need a course of oral antibiotics and topical treatments to resolve this. This may also be a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis. This can lead to secondary skin infections as well. A different topical treatment is needed to treat this. Again, I would have your vet examine Frankie to determine what this is in order to start the most appropriate treatment. If you are unable to get to your vet to have him seen, you can at least start a shampoo called duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection resolves. I would be concerned that these bumps could indicate an infection like ringworm but a bacterial infection, mange, an allergic reaction and even certain types of skin cancer can looks like this. Because some of those causes can be infectious to humans I recommend your veterinarian examine Sandie and potentially do further testing such as a culture or biopsy to see for sure what is going on with her skin.

Hello there! Considering her age and breed, the lump on Skye's head is most likely a benign mass called a histiocytoma. Only a vet can diagnose this for sure, but this is the most likely cause. The mass on the leg may also be a histiocytoma, as the head, face, legs, and feet are the most common locations for them to grow, and if a dog has one, they are more likely to have multiple over their lifetime. A histiocytoma can be unsightly, but they usually go away on their own after a few months. Some owners elect to have them removed if they keep getting scratched or infected, and this is usually curative at that location. There are other conditions that could cause lumps like these (though they are less likely, like a viral infection or cancer), and a visit to your vet will help to determine what that might be. The vet will give Skye a full physical exam, and they will likely take a small sample of cells from within the lumps with a small needle - a procedure called a fine needle aspirate, or FNA. This may not give a definitive diagnosis, but it can be helpful in ruling out more worrisome issues. It can also help the vet decide if the lumps need to come off for further testing, but I'd be surprised if this was the case. I recommend that you take Skye to visit the vet to confirm the lumps' cause, but it's not an emergency. Good luck, and I hope Skye's lumpiness clears up soon!

This does not sound like a normal thing to happen in dogs, and I recommend that Binky see a vet for her skin issue. Your vet may do a skin scrape to look for mites, skin cytology to look for bacteria or yeast under a microscope, or bacterial or fungal cultures may be needed. Possible causes for bumps include fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. I would recommend that Binky be on year-round flea prevention. While you await for your appointment, you can try a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo, but be careful not to get it into her eyes. Also, think of any changes that have happened in the last few weeks, like changes in food, treats, medications, supplements, or household cleaners that could have had an effect on her skin.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar is useful as well to avoid any scratching (as you have used). This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!
