Why did my dog's black nail turn clear after allergy meds?

Trauma to the nail, infection or even certain endocrine disorders can cause the nail color to change, but you would see other symptoms such as excessive licking of the paw, sensitivity, lameness, discharge, bleeding, swelling, weight gain or an increase in thirst or urination. As long as Montgomery is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern regarding the change in nail color.

Poor Ruger - I'm so sorry for his past difficulties as well as for what he's going through now - he's so lucky to have found you. The first thing I would want to rule out is ringworm in this location. I know it sounds strange, however it can get into the nailbed and cause the kind of brittle, discolored nails you're seeing. Ringworm is actually a fungus and not a worm as some people think. Your vet can run a fungal culture using shavings from the nails to check for this. If the culture comes back negative, I would probably next consider whether this could be a case of lupoid onychodystrophy. German Shepherds are predisposed to this disease, and since Ruger is a mix it's worth considering. Treatment can be challenging, but it's worth trying several things including omega-3 fatty acids, antibiotics such as doxycycline, and pentoxyfillne to increase blood flow to the region. Some dogs will also respond to steroid therapy. Best of luck getting this figured out.

That appears to be normal pigmentation development. If there is any sign of infection around the nail bed (redness, swelling, discharge) or Kendra is licking/chewing the area, you may want to have it examined and treated. But the color development appears normal. Hope this helps.

As long as Ella is otherwise doing fine, it would ok to monitor as if it is just mild inflammation, it is expected to normalize and look like the rest of her nails within a day or two. Hello. Posey may be chronically licking at this nail for some reason. Usually, this is an infection with Malessezia paronychia, a yeast like organism. Next time you see your veterinarian, suggest a skin scrape be done at the level of the nail bed to see if she can get more information. If organisms are seen, then treatment with an oral antifungal medication & a medicated shampoo for a month usually clears this infection up. The discolored nail will slowly grow out. The nail of the dew claw (the one you're concerned about) is just broken and a bit deformed. These nails tend to get these deformities as the dog ages, because they do not get worn down like the rest of the nails when the dog walks. A good trim of the nails by a groomer or vet office will help it look more normal. It appears that her other nails are also a bit overgrown too, so those can get trimmed as well. The licking and wheezing sounds are more concerning to me. Dogs that lick too much are often doing it because they are itchy. The fact that there is also some wheezing and hacking makes me suspicious that your dog is allergic to something in the environment. It's best to have this checked by a veterinarian, so they can help identify the cause and prescribe Princess some medication to make her feel better. They can also take care of those nails. The most common cause of brown discoloration of nails is a yeast infection. Most yeast infections are secondary to allergies and excessive licking of the paws. If he licks his paws then you should talk to your vet about trying medications to control his allergies. In the mean time you could soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Dry them well after soaking.
