My dog has black bugs around his healing anal abscess. What are they?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 15 lbs

My dog had an abscess near his rectum that had popped. I kept it clean as I could. I noticed he has little black flea like bugs all around his rectum and near the healing abscess that he tried to bite at. What is this and what needs to be done

It looks like it could possibly be an anal sac abscess. These usually need antibiotics to heal up. In the meantime I would recommend warm compresses with warm water and Epsom salt to help with the inflammation and discomfort. I can’t see any bugs in the picture, but the veterinarian will be able to help you decide if they are fleas and what treatment they prefer. Best of luck and I hope Romi improves soon!
