My German Shepherd has a black/blue tongue spot. Is it normal?

I presume the area you are talking about is the area on the lower lip just behind the canine tooth where it is a splotchy pink color. That area is where the upper canine rubs when Shelby's mouth is closed, so the tissue in that area tends to get a little thicker for protection. Sometimes those changes can also result in some color changes. Since it is the same on both sides, I suspect it is normal. If either side looks different or seems to be irritated, I would certainly have your veterinarian examine her, but this picture looks normal. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like normal pigmentation, which can appear suddenly on the skin or mucous membranes. Please, show it to your local vets the next time you take Rocky in to make sure there is nothing to worry about.

As long as its not raised, and its never been ulcerated/bleeding, and its not changing in size, I don't think you need to be concerned. Pigment of skin and mucous membranes (gums, tongue, etc) can change with age and it is not indicative of a problem. If it DOES seem to be changing, if it becomes ulcerated or raised, talk to your vet; if that occurs, then it needs to be biopsied. But as I said already, based on what your saying and on your photo, I'm not worried. This can be a normal change. No one knows exactly why it happens. Hi there! This is normal and many German Shepherd's have this very same presentation. It should not cause any problems and has probably been there for the lifetime of your pet. No worries! Hope this helps.

This could be a ringworm lesion(fungal disease), a vitiligo lesion (where the pigment of the skin is lost), or a wart or other tumor. This will need to be examined in a hands-on matter, the skin needs to be palpated, a possible skin scrape or brush sample taken or a fine needle aspirate, in order to properly diagnose this condition. Once a diagnosis is made it will be clear whether treatment is necessary or not and if so, what kind of treatment. Please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam.

It could be an infection or possibly an auto-immune disease. Have your vet take a look at the lesions to determine the exact cause. Your vet can do a biopsy, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. He may need an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory.
