My dog suddenly has a black spot on his tongue. Should I be worried?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 66 lbs

My dog is 2 year old. And suddenly a black spot appear on his tongue. Are there any reason to worry about?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like normal pigmentation, which can appear suddenly on the skin or mucous membranes. Please, show it to your local vets the next time you take Rocky in to make sure there is nothing to worry about.

Most of the time is normal coloring of the tongue mucosa. I would recommend t post a picture so we will be able to help you further and have a better idea regarding the appearance of the spot. At this stage I cannot rule out an infection or a tumor, even if very unlikely, given his age.

Thank you for the question. Some does will have a black spot on the tongue which is normal. If this is a new finding I would monitor his eating and make sure he is feeling okay. If you notice any changes I would recommend taking him to a vet. hope that helps

It could be normal pigmentation and no cause for concern. Monitor it for rapid change or growth. Monitor Lily for lethargy, decreased appetite, drooling, pawing at the mouth, swelling of the tongue or difficulty breathing. These are symptoms which should be addressed by your veterinarian.

As long as its not raised, and its never been ulcerated/bleeding, and its not changing in size, I don't think you need to be concerned. Pigment of skin and mucous membranes (gums, tongue, etc) can change with age and it is not indicative of a problem. If it DOES seem to be changing, if it becomes ulcerated or raised, talk to your vet; if that occurs, then it needs to be biopsied. But as I said already, based on what your saying and on your photo, I'm not worried. This can be a normal change. No one knows exactly why it happens. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Pigmentary changes to the hair/coat are not that unusual, especially if there are no underlying lesions. If your pet ever sustained an injury to that area in the past, even a mild infection or burn, the hair follicles can be affected & color can change months to even years later. So, if she is not bothered by the area, you feel no lumps, bumps, roughness, see no redness or dermatitis, then this may just be a normal change in an unusual area. Just mention it to your vet at your next visit. Take care.
