My dog's anus is red and he's licking it. Are his anal glands full?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 24 lbs

Hi! My dog is a 5 year old Pomeranian. In the 1st week of April I noticed that his anus became red and he was licking it a lot. I am unable to visit a veternarian as all them are closed in my area due to Corona pandemic. I googled the problem and it said that my dog had anal sac disease and I need to express them manually. I expressed the glands externally and some brownish red fluid came out. He was fine for a few days but the problem repeated. Im unable to visit a vet please give me a solution

His anal glands may be full again. Normally, they are expressed during the act of defecation. You are quite brave to do it on your own! Not many pet parents would do that. If you feel comfortable doing it again, do so but gently. If the problem persists, you will have no choice but to seek veterinary attention. Clinics and veterinary ERs will see patients. If left untreated, Scooby could form an abscess which is very painful and may require sedation to lance and drain. You can consider a product, such as Glandex, to help with anal gland issues.

Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

Why is my dog scooting with a red, swollen anus after diarrhea?

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

Why is my dog scooting his butt after recent anal gland expression?

Hi there. It sounds like Lucky's anal glands are probably full again. This can be a recurring issue in some dogs, unfortunately. I would recommend taking him back to the vet tomorrow to have them checked and expressed again, if needed. You can ask your veterinarian to show you how to do this at home if you want to, to help avoid frequent vet visits for this problem in the future.

Why does my dog keep getting impacted anal glands and licking?

Every pet is different and some pets may need their glands expressed every few weeks. Most however will be less frequent. This can be a problem in any dog but it is more common in small dogs. There is a supplement called glandex which many pets respond well to. You may also try feeding him a higher fiber diet. Lastly, sometimes frequent anal gland issues can be a sign of allergies. You may talk with your veterinarian about ways to diagnose an allergy and if this seems to be indicated. Surgery is also an option to remove the anal glands. My dog keeps scooting after anal gland expression. Is this normal?

Residual inflammation is normal, especially if the glands were already inflamed. You may call your vet and ask about a course of anti-inflammatory medication. Omega 3 fatty acids can also help. Lastly, a cool (not cold) compress may be a better option to relieve the burning. Sometimes supplements like Glandex can help. If Adam continues to have itchy anal glands, you may want to discuss ruling out food allergies with your vet. I always use a hydrolyzed protein for this. I hope this helps.

My dog scoots, licks his rear, and has an enlarged anus. What's wrong?

I think Max might have a problem with his anal glands, two scent glands located to the sides of the anus that can get impacted and turn into proper abscesses ( localised infection ). I would recommend that you have him checked over as it can be quite uncomfortable ! He will need some antibiotics and pain relief .
