My dog got a bite wound. Can I give him another dog's antibiotics?

It is possible it is a bite or sting, or an infection. A veterinarian would also need to look inside her mouth at her teeth and the inner surface of the lip. For what it is worth, there should not be leftover antibiotics unless the veterinarian told you to stop giving them. And I definitely do not recommend giving them without being instructed by your veterinarian. Antibiotic resistance is a big problem that can be made worse by giving them when they aren't needed, or stopping them before they have been finished. If Roxy is pawing at the face, rubbing the area, I definitely recommend having it looked at to determine if it seems more likely to be infection or allergic reaction. If this just popped up and doesn't seem to be distressing her, you could wait 24 hours to see if it goes away. If she will let you, an ice cube can be rubbed over the area to decrease inflammation.

Hi, I would recommend you clip all the fur around the area and clean it with some diluted chlorexidine twice a day for the next 3-4 days.The antibiotics and antinflammatories you are giving are fine but Ronny might need to have that wound sutured, it looks quite a large gap between skin edges.

I'm sorry that Hank is injured. It would not be safe for you to give Hank an injection for a dog bite. He likely needs wound care and antibiotics that only a veterinarian can prescribe. He may also need pain medication and because there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs you will need to get a safe medication from a veterinarian. Poor Viper! I don't recommend giving over the counter pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals. It will also limit the type of pain medication that your veterinarian can prescribe and may result in Viper not getting adequate pain control. Unfortunately there is nothing over the counter that can be given to dogs for pain control, so if he is acting very painful, I would recommend taking him to a vet tonight if you can. If you are unable to, I would recommend taking him as soon as you can tomorrow. Most bite wounds will get infected and they almost always need oral antibiotics. The veterinarian will also make sure the wound isn't worse than it looks. Bite wounds can appear small on the surface, but can penetrate deeper than what we see or tear the skin from underlying tissue so that a pocket is created under the skin. He will likely need the hair shaved around the area to better investigate the opening. Oral antibiotics and a cleansing solution will likely be needed as well. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him so that he does not lick the area. Any time the dogs are unsupervised, they will need to be kept separate. The dog other licking the wound will make it worse. Be sure to keep the area clean and dry. I hope this information helps!

Inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria. You shouldn't have any antibiotics "left over", it is always best to finish the course. You can place an e-collar (cone) on Apollo to prevent licking. This may be enough to allow for healing. Clean the area daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. If there is no improvement in 2-3 days, have Apollo examined by your veterinarian.
