My dog was bitten, has a tear. Can I treat it at home without a vet?

This is a medical emergency and your dog has to see a vet tonight if he's still bleeding and in a lot of pain. He likely needs stitches to close up his wound, and there is nothing safe you can give him at home for his pain. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. This wound can become severely infected if left untreated, and he will still be in a lot of pain. I would let your mother know you spoke to a veterinarian who told you that he has to see a vet now. Your mom can check to see if there is an ER vet clinic in your area; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I am so sorry that Misty girl got into a fight. It sounds like the wound is large enough that it likely needs stitches and likely isn't too late. I would strongly recommend contacting your vet for an exam and treatment. If it is small enough, they may be able to place staples and help it heal. But she will likely also need oral antibiotics to help it heal as wounds from other dogs usually get infected because dogs have a lot of nasty bacteria in their mouths. Until you can get her to the vet, I would also recommend that you keep her from licking or scratching it. You can use a small t-shirt (depending on its location) or an e-collar (the lampshade collars found at a pet store). I hope she starts feeling better soon!

Poor pup! I would strongly discourage home care for a wound like this. Yes, wounds can heal by second intention (without sutures ), but risk of infection and delayed healing are potential complications. I would clean it with warm water as best you can, and get him in to a veterinarian soon. Even if your veterinarian elects to let it heal without intervention, they can clean it properly and prescribe antibiotics.

Ideally, Miko should be examined by your veterinarian. He may not be painful now, but tomorrow he may be. The wound should be cleaned and flushed. Antibiotics and pain management may both be indicated. Monitor for bleeding, discharge, swelling, redness, odor, lethargy or lameness.

If they are play fighting a lot, then you may have to keep them separated until the wound can heal. 1. Clip the hair away from the wound using buzzing-type clippers, not scissors or a razor. See a vet if your pet experiences prolonged lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rectal temperature over 103, or if there is creamy discharge or discharge with a foul odor, or there is swelling around the wound.
