My dog has a small, non-bleeding fight wound. Can I treat it at home?

This presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound) and/ or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be continued at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). I would recommend to shave fur around the wound (clippers are best as if you do it with scissors you may injury him) to be able to clean the area best as possible. After cleaning you can dry it up and apply any cream containing zinc oxide (like sudocream). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. This is a medical emergency and your dog has to see a vet tonight if he's still bleeding and in a lot of pain. He likely needs stitches to close up his wound, and there is nothing safe you can give him at home for his pain. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. This wound can become severely infected if left untreated, and he will still be in a lot of pain. I would let your mother know you spoke to a veterinarian who told you that he has to see a vet now. Your mom can check to see if there is an ER vet clinic in your area; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Please take him into a vet now.

Thanks for using PetCoach. Unfortunately, without an exam (or at least pictures), I'm a bit limited on what advice I can give. Where the wound is would be important to know. I am less concerned about a bite to the leg than I am to the belly or neck. How deep is it? How is Della Reese feeling? Is she eating and running around or lethargic and not eating? My concerns and recommendations -Infection - very common in dog bite wounds - if there is a hole or deep wound anywhere, it needs to be flushed very thoroughly with dilute iodine or hydrogen peroxide. This is possibly the MOST important step. The wounds need to be left OPEN to drain. If you cover them up tightly you will be trapping the bacteria inside and cause an abscess. They will drain some blood-tinged fluid for a few days but it shouldn't be pure blood. If the mess is a problem, put a t-shirt on her (if wounds are on the torso) or keep her on tile/laminate surfaces. Warm compress the wounds twice daily to encourage that fluid to come out the wound holes. Honestly, depending on the severity and location, she really needs antibiotics. Even if you can only get into the vet for the exam and antibiotics, its worth doing. - Blood loss- as noted above, you're more-likely seeing blood-tinged discharge stuff than actual pure blood. Even if there was pure blood at first, she is big enough that she could safely loose a cup of blood or more. - Pain medication - motrin (ibuprofen) is an unsafe drug choice for dogs and is not recommended. If she has only had one dose, stop and switch her to aspirin 24 hours after the first dose. There is not much more you can do from home. I would keep the dogs separated for now until you can figure out why they got into a fight. If you are unable to take your dog to the vet to be stitched up, continue to keep the wound clean and dry and try to keep it from getting infected. It will obviously take much longer to heal if stitches are needed. There may be scarring and permanent hair in that area as well. If Gizmo seems to be lethargic, feverish or stops eating, this could indicate that the infection has spread into his bloodstream. If the wound is deep, ideally, your dog should be physically examined by a veterinarian. Sutures (stitches) may be needed to close the cut. If it is superficial, you may be able to manage it at home. I suggest carefully trimming (use clippers, not scissors) the hair away and cleaning the area gently with a diluted Betadine, chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) or similar [antibacterial solution](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-wound-and-skin-care-for-dogs). Dry thoroughly afterwards. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment can be applied to a minor wound. If the wound shows no signs of healing after a few days, consider an exam with your veterinarian. Those do look pretty ouchie, especially the right wound. If the bleeding has stopped, I would keep the area clean and dry and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Harlow to keep her from rubbing or pawing at it which may cause it to bleed again. If the wound still looks deep and inflamed, has gotten larger, or begins to look infected (swelling, hot to the touch, oozing debris, extremely painful) then it is best to call your vet in the AM to be seen.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Takoda! I would try to shave all the fur away from the area and check closely for other wounds. Then clean the skin with water and a mild soap. Avoid hydrogen peroxide as it can damage the skin. Then apply a triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. If there is a large full thickness gash or puncture it is best to have Takoda seen by a Vet to see if surgery is warranted or oral antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish Takoda the best!
