My dog bit me, now has a fever. Is it rabies if vaccine was delayed?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations, the chance of you contracting rabies is incredibly low. What we recommend is to quarantine the dog who bit you (or have the owner of the dog quarantine it) for 10 days and monitor the dog for the development of any abnormal neurologic signs. If the dog is completely normal after 10 days from the time you were bit, you are in the clear. If the dog becomes sick at all in that time frame, or if you become sick at all, I recommend contacting your doctor. I hope this is helpful - best of luck!

But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Always keep your pets up to date on rabies and prevent them interacting with wild life and unvaccinated pets. I wish you the best!

If he is still running a fever after all of this, I would get him seen by an emergency veterinarian to be safe. He may need something stronger such as a steroid to help with a potential reaction. There may be something else going on such as an infection as well. I would get him seen as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like the bite wound has become infected. Bite wounds typically require the attention of a veterinarian. If the wound is deep enough, it may require stitches and prescription antibiotics if it is infected. Depending on your local animal control and rabies laws, your puppy may need a rabies vaccine now and then a booster in 6 months. I would be sure to have Puppy seen by a veterinarian right away so he can have this wound evaluated.

If it has been longer than this, it is likely unrelated to the vaccines that a good reason to have Saski evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure that there is not something else going on. Good luck! If Storm has Rabies in the infectious form (in salivary glands) he will show signs of Rabies with in 10 days regardless of receiving the vaccine. We just worry when giving the Rabies vaccine with in that 10 day window that if the dog has a reaction to the vaccine we may think it is Rabies when it isn't. The only way your husband could have gotten Rabies from Storm is if it was in his salivary glands. So if Storm is fine at day 10-14 your Husband will also be fine. I wish you the best!

Unless you bit him and have rabies, he can’t get it from biting you. Keep up on his vaccinations and he should be good.
