My dog's skin is itchy after surgery. What helps the shaving itch?

I am afraid the itch is the wound trying to heal. Anything that would stop the itching would likely also hinder healing. I actually think the woulnd is irritating him and a natural reaction to that is to lick the wound. Of course we need to keep him from licking the wound and contaminating it with nasty mouth bacteria as well as opening the wound. So, Priat will need to be brave and plow through having a e-collar or wearing the doggy jacket. It will keep him from licking and so facilitates healing. The pain and itching should be gone in a few days (DO NOT take off the jacket until your vet says so). He will get used to it and be a good boy.

Sometimes an oatmeal based shampoo helps with itching (do not bathe your puppy until at least 10-25 days after her surgery). For flea control there are both OTC and prescription options as well as topical and oral. Depending on his frequently they are bathed, tolerance of topical application and other factors your veterinarian could recommend which product(s) work best for your situation. If you need something now most pet supply stores have products like Frontline or Advantage topical a which work well. It is important their environment is treated as well to prevent fleas. Hi ! I think the itchiness is related to the wound itself rather than the discharge. Unless there is the beginning of an infection but from your brief description I gather the discharge is minimal and clear which I suspect is secondary to inflammation. Obviously correct me if I am wrong ! If it’s all correct, I would wipe away the oozing with some cotton wool and salty water and keep an eye on the wound. I would give him a cool water bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. He should be in a cone if he’s licking the area. It is most likely from the shaving. You can give Benadryl to calm the itching. There is a section on this website with dosages and facts about common over the counter medications you can give your dog. The cortisone cream may help calm the skin too. This may take several days for the irritation to improve. If he makes sores please take him in for an exam and medication to control the itching. Poor girl, that doesn't look very comfortable. I'd recommend wiping the areas of with hydrogen peroxide once (avoiding the incision for her spay), and then putting her in a baby onsie (maybe two) in addition to an e-collar. The onsie is to protect her a skin if she tries to scratch. If it's looking worse instead of better after 24 hours, I'd recommend taking her back to the vet to see if she need antibiotics. Itching or licking damages skin, which allows normal bacteria on the surface to set up a mild infection, and sometimes the immune system can clear it up if the itching stops, but sometimes oral or topical medications are required.

If your vet prescribed 28 pills after a surgery then you should give all the pills until gone unless otherwise directed by your vet. If the dog is scratching and licking at the incision then you need to put a cone collar on him and a socks on his back feet to prevent scratching.
