My dog has a belly bump. Is it a belly button or should I be worried?

This very localized lump could be due to a trauma and inflammation/exudation of fluid under the skin in between muscles. Unfortunately it is diffiuclt to be more specific than that without having a feel during physical examination. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This lump/growth should be ideally examined by your veterinarian to have a definitive diagnosis. Your vet will examine it and possibly perform with an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy. Differentials would include skin cyst, infections or benign or malignant type of tumors. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Mia! A photo may help give us a little more information about what could be going on with her. A lump could be something like an abscess or site of infection, a hernia (a small hole in the muscle wall of the abdomen where internal structures or fat may poke through), or a mass (we can have benign masses/tumors such as lipomas that are just fat and not a health concern and we can have masses/tumors that are malignant and can spread and require removal). I would recommend taking her in for your vet to examine the area. They may recommend what is called a "needle aspirate" where a small needle is inserted into the mass to collect cells to help determine the cause of the lump.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Devon. The bumps in the pictures appears to be his nipples. These are completely normal even in male dogs. They were just likely difficult to see before his hair was shaved. As long as they are not enlarging, tender or changing in shape, you do not need to worry. I hope this information helps!
