My dog changed behavior after a bite. Is he in pain or anxious?

Hello, I would recommend having your vet check your dog, it could certainly be behavioral but it could also be something medical going on by your description, such as an infection or a rash. Your vet will start with a good physical exam and be able to get some answers for you.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nate! I think an important first step is to have your Vet examine Nate. He could be painful at the site of the bite, despite no outward wounds. He could have neck (muscle) pain like whip lash or be generally sore. That could explain the lack of energy and slowly coming down the stairs. I strongly feel that you need to be sure he is actually healthy before considering this a new behavioral problem from being attacked. Most dogs aren't overly traumatized mentally after getting in to fights but it is possible. If your vet finds nothing wrong with Nate they can discuss anti-anxiety medications and behavioral modifications to help him get back to normal. Good luck!

As you are aware t may be difficult to break the cycle if you change his routine and spend more time and affection with him but he does need some additional assurance after such an ordeal. Try to gradually increase the amount of time he spends alone in a safe area where he feels comfortable over then next few weeks . A calming supplement such as kalm aid or royal canin calm food and a pheromone diffser may also help in his recovery and reducing the anxiety he feels

She could have pain somewhere in or on her body or she could have anxiety. It is hard to say for sure without seeing her or examining her actions. I would recommend video taping her doing this and showing it to your veterinarian. The vet can also do a complete physical exam to make sure she is not hurting somewhere on her body. Typically pets will gnaw or limp on a certain leg if they are experiencing pain along the skin or musculoskeleton. If she is painful in her belly, then you can see vomiting, lethargy, and lack of appetite associated with it. I hope this helps and best of luck finding out what's truly going on with your pet Riley. I recommend keeping a close eye on him over the next 24 hours and having him seen by a vet if these symptoms continue. This is quite strange behavior. It sounds like it is mostly anxiety and stress related due to the change in environment and care givers. I would have your girlfriend try to give him some treats and feed him to help "win him over" again as long as he isn't being too aggressive. I do not want her to get bit again. If this behavior continues on and off, I would consider putting a calming collar on her like adaptil and giving him a calming chew like vetriscience composure. Finally, if that doesn't help, I would talk to your vet about starting him on an anti-anxiety medicine like fluoxetine. I hope this helps and he starts to get back to normal soon!

It is possible the fight may have caused muscle strains or stretched nerves, the pain and discomfort of which is often worse 24hours after a trauma. I recommend a recheck by your vet if this is persisting beyond 48hours, acupuncture and chiropractic care may also help
