How often should I bathe my dog? What dog shampoo is safe to use?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I would like to bathe my three year old pit bull mix once a week, but I don't know if it would hurt my dog. Also, I would like to know if there is a specific brand I should use.

Bathing your dog weekly may be too excessive and can lead to dry skin and itchiness. I would recommend bathing no more than one to two times a month. Most pet stores carry dog safe brands of pet shampoo. Most brands are just fine to use on Rocky.

I usually don't recommend bathing more than once a month, unless they get dirty before this. If he does OK with bathing once a week and isn't getting dry, flaky or itchy, then it's probably fine. If you do notice these signs, I would try to decrease the frequency you are bathing. You could also look for a cream rinse (like a conditioner) that you can use after you bathe. These may be available over the counter at the pet store. Some veterinarians will also carry prescription cream rinses, so you could ask your veterinarian if they do.
