Is my dog's excessive shedding after daily flea baths normal?

Unfortunately it sounds like something is biting him (like fleas, flea baths and dips only last a few hours to 1 days and do not prevent NEW fleas from jumping back on), or skin irritation from bathing or grooming or full anal glands. Sometimes gassy intestines or stomachs causing cramping will also make dogs jump up quickly. I would check his skin well for irritation or live fleas. I would use a long lasting GOOD flea preventative like the oral medications Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto or the Seresto collar. I wish you the best!

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. You should not have to use any flea shampoo now that she is on the Nexgard. Those flea shampoos are harsh on their skin and full of chemicals. You can use the L'oreal but it is not really recommended. If you do use it, use it sparingly and don't make it a habit. Dog skin is a different pH than ours, therefore, our shampoos tend to dry them out and strip the natural oils from their coats. I suggest you use a calming dog shampoo like this one. It will not dry her out or strip the oils. Fleas and allergies to fleas can set-up an environment for infection. It's possible that this is complicating the recovery process. The skin will often start to heal once the fleas are gone, but it's worth treating for infection by giving a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (can get this at the pet store). It's best to just give a bath with the medicated shampoo once every 2-3 days, until the skin starts to look normal. It's expected that it will take a month or more until Buddy starts to look normal again, so stick with it and he should get through this fine. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas can reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. The most common causes of excessive shedding and areas of balding are: demodex (non-contagious mite), ring worm and a skin infection. Demodex can be easily treated with one of the oral flea/tick preventatives (Nexgard, Simparica or Bravecto). Skin infections are treat with antibiotics or anti-fungals if it is yeast. Ring worm can be a bit more complicated. I do not think it is normal shedding because she shouldn't have areas that are thin or balding. I wish you the best!

Great job getting rid of the fleas! Yes, it can be normal to have scabs and hair falling out if there was a flea infestation. I would recommend you bathe your dog with a medicated shampoo like this one every 3-4 days until the skin looks better. It will take a while for the hair to grow back. The most common reasons for hair loss are: skin infection, ring worm, demodex or underlying metabolic issue like a low thyroid and cushing's disease (older dogs). Also in some breeds, like boxers, will get a seasonal flank alopecia. Without seeing a picture it is hard to know what is causing Derby's hair to fall out. It is best to have him seen by your Vet.
