My dog hates baths and drying. How to make bath time less stressful?

You can try an over the counter calming supplement such as zylkene or composure in combination with offering rewards during the bath such as treats. It will work best if you have two people, one to bathe the dog and one to feed treats while the bath is going on. You can even take a long wooden spoon and put peanut butter on the end so they can hold it in front of her face and she can lick the spoon while being bathed.

Baths can be fun or really scary. I would work in desensitizing your pup about baths. You c am do this by making the bath a positive experience. I would work with really yummy treats and putting them in the tub. No bath. Just getting used to getting in the tub and having a treat. You could even start putting his food in there (as long as she can reach). Keep working on this until she goes in and out easily on her own without much coaxing. Then next time I would have treats in one hand and turn the water on and off. Keep offering lots of treats and praise. Still no bath. Do this daily until she’s no longer worried about the water. Then you can start to work on getting her wet and progress until she’s comfortable with that too. Secret trick is smearing peanut butter (all natural of course!! Make sure it has no sweaters and NOT XYLITOL, it’s highly toxic). It usually keeps them busy working on that while you bath.

Some dogs really hate having a bath, and Kiba sounds like he really hates it if he won't even take treats. I typically recommend treats and soothing voices to help calm a dog down. Be sure to stay calm, and as less stressed as possible. Try giving him treats he doesn't normally get like chicken or pig ears. If it really is too difficult for you to bath him, I would take Kiba to a groomers for it. That takes the stress off of you, and groomers are well trained at dealing with dogs who baths :-)

Baby steps! Make it a fun experience for Leo. If Leo has a favorite treat, you can use this to your advantage. Start by just bringing him into the tub or area you bathe him in, and offer lots of treats and praise without turning the water on. Once he is comfortable, you can then start gently letting the water run next to him, without actually bathing him. Again, treat and praise each time you do this. You can then transition to gently running water over him while offering treats and praise, and then move onto a full bath. It may take some time, and you will need to do this in steps. If at any time Leo starts to become afraid, going back to the previous step until he is comfortable is best. Over time, he'll associate the area with fun, rather than fear.

Hello, I would not consider it abuse to bathe an animal, even though they may dislike it. If Strawberry is so stressed by being bathed that you feel the need to use excessive physical force to restrain her, I would recommend talking to your vet about getting her a prescription for anti-anxiety medication to give her prior to future baths. Gabapentin is a drug commonly used for stressful situations like this. If she is just sad about being bathed, then that is completely normal as cats typically dislike water. Like most pets, they will occasionally get dirty and need to be cleaned, so it is a necessary (though not fun) part of cat ownership. Using treats, like special canned food, tuna, catnip, or toys to reward her after baths may help her cope with stress as well. If she is more smelly than dirty, a foaming waterless bath spray may help to extend the time between full water baths. I hope this is helpful! However, sometimes dogs with skin allergies and bathed very frequently and it actually helps them. So you may need to monitor Bear and see if frequent bathing causes any dryness or redness to his skin. There are several products on the market that are more like dry shampoo or mousse that you could brush through Bear's coat to eliminate some of the dirt and odor. If necessary you can also bathe Bear every one to two weeks, but please do it less frequently if you notice any dryness or redness of the skin related to bathing.

Blow drying is very stressful for a dog who is not used to it from when he was small, Frequent bathing is not necessary for a dog, and neither is blow drying. You should only wash your dog when she is very dirty (such as after rolling in something stinky). Frequent bathing causes dry itchy skin, which then can turn into a chronic skin condition. You may want to teach her that being in water is fun by going for walkies near a pond or lake, where you can entice her to go swimming (chasing after a ball, for example). Then getting wet while bathing her may not be so scary. Once she is not so scared any more she will likely not lose her poop like that.
