How to calm a dog that hates bath time and won't take treats?

You can try an over the counter calming supplement such as zylkene or composure in combination with offering rewards during the bath such as treats. It will work best if you have two people, one to bathe the dog and one to feed treats while the bath is going on. You can even take a long wooden spoon and put peanut butter on the end so they can hold it in front of her face and she can lick the spoon while being bathed.

Baths can be fun or really scary. I would work in desensitizing your pup about baths. You c am do this by making the bath a positive experience. I would work with really yummy treats and putting them in the tub. No bath. Just getting used to getting in the tub and having a treat. You could even start putting his food in there (as long as she can reach). Keep working on this until she goes in and out easily on her own without much coaxing. Then next time I would have treats in one hand and turn the water on and off. Keep offering lots of treats and praise. Still no bath. Do this daily until she’s no longer worried about the water. Then you can start to work on getting her wet and progress until she’s comfortable with that too. Secret trick is smearing peanut butter (all natural of course!! Make sure it has no sweaters and NOT XYLITOL, it’s highly toxic). It usually keeps them busy working on that while you bath.

At that point, you can run a small amount of water (just an inch or two) in the tub while praising and giving lots of treats - then let him out. Repeat this until he's comfortable, etc. Gradually work up to being able to give him a full bath - use peanut butter or other treats so that he can be eating the entire time, and stop if he becomes upset. With time and patience, all dogs can learn to tolerate and even enjoy bathtime - so it's definitely worth working on :)

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! This us unfortunate! I would first watch out for your safety, I do not want you to get bit. I would try wiping peanut butter on the tile or the bath tub and see if turning the water on and spraying around him (not one him at first) eliminates the growling. Gradually over time, if this works, try wetting him then bathing him. If this doesn't work I would ask your Vet for a short acting sedative like Trazadone to give 2 hours before the bath to help calm him some. Huskies are not a breed that inherently likes water but you can do things to try to get Luna to like baths. Try smearing peanut butter on the side of the tub and allowing her to lick it off during bath time. You can also try giving her high value treats during the bath. Its important that she does not get these treats at any other time. Lastly, try not to become frustrated with her. She will pick up on the negative energy. Be patient and slow. I hope this helps!

I’m sorry to hear about your dog. It is possible that his former owners treatment of bath time may have given him anxiety about it. It sounds like you’re doing everything right but if his anxiety is still severe, talk to your veterinarian about an occasional use anti-anxiety medication which can help tremendously with feeling more relaxed at bath time. Baby steps! Make it a fun experience for Leo. If Leo has a favorite treat, you can use this to your advantage. Start by just bringing him into the tub or area you bathe him in, and offer lots of treats and praise without turning the water on. Once he is comfortable, you can then start gently letting the water run next to him, without actually bathing him. Again, treat and praise each time you do this. You can then transition to gently running water over him while offering treats and praise, and then move onto a full bath. It may take some time, and you will need to do this in steps. If at any time Leo starts to become afraid, going back to the previous step until he is comfortable is best. Over time, he'll associate the area with fun, rather than fear.
