My dog barks at visitors at the door. How do I manage this fear?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 10 days old

How do I stop my dog from barking at people when they come to the door? I believe that before we got Zoe, she may have been abused by a large woman with short grey hair. I know this because of the way Zoe reacted when she saw the woman. she was terrified. Now Zoe barks at anyone who looks similar. My Nanna also looks similar and this is a problem because she comes to visit a lot and is also afraid of dogs. She gets quite frightened of Zoe when she barks. How do I prevent this from happening?

Your best option is to have a professional trainer come to your home and evaluate her during these situations. They will be able to give you the best advice. Behavior issues are not quick fixes and if you don't know what you are doing you could make the dog worse instead of better. These types of behaviors should be handled by a professional.

I don't know where you are located so just do a google search for in-home professional dog trainers (like Bark Busters or Sit Means Sit) or you can probably get a reference from your veterinarian.
