My new foster dog has bad skin & smells. Is it contagious? What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I just picked up a dog yesterday from a pound to foster and it has a bad skin disorder of some kind and smells really bad. Balding and scabs, bleeding crusting and fluid filled bumps around top of head, under chin, legs. I have two young kids and no money to take the dog to the vet. Could this be contagious? What can I do?

It's not likely to be contagious to your kid but it requires a vet visit to be treated as there could be many reasons for these symptoms.
If money is an issue please contact a dog charity in your area of living, they can help with costs of treatment in many cases. Many vets also have payment plans, and there is also a credit company that will land you money toward vet bills ( https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/) .
