My dog has terrible breath, mouth sores, drooling, and jaw lumps. What should I do?

This sounds like severe dental disease with gum loss and loose teeth. The chattering of the jaw is a sign of pain and you should have him assessed by your vet as soon as possible to remove any further damaged teeth and clean the rest of them

Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw. It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able. I hope this helps! I wish Lucky the best!

It sounds like there are a few things going on with her. These growths could be mammary tumors, and 50% of mammary tumors are malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Her bad breath could be due to dental disease, which is common in senior dogs. This needs to be checked out by a vet as well, and she may need a dental cleaning. That is a bit of buildup! Make sure you are using a dog-safe toothpaste as human toothpaste is actually toxic to pets. As for the lump/bump circled, it's hard to say what it is. I would keep an eye on it, and if it grows, changes rapidly, or becomes bothersome, it would be best to have your vet take a look at it sooner than your February appointment. Your vet can also schedule a dental cleaning at the same time if the bump needs to be removed.

You should have Pete examined by your veterinarian. There may be periodontal disease, infection or foreign body causing the symptoms. Sedation may be required to examine him fully. If it is periodontal disease, a complete dental cleaning may be indicated. This will require anesthesia and Pete may need extractions.

Hello, sorry to hear about Gunner. CUPS is typically a diagnosis that is made with histopathology and examination for the hallmark changes in the gum line. Given that Gunner has bad breath and drooling this is very possible. Besides having a dental cleaning and extractions if necessary, most dogs also need antibiotic therapy. CUPS is in general a very painful condition that prevents dogs from being unable to eat. If Gunner develops anorexia, then he may need to have a dental in order to alleviate his pain. These are all signs of a pretty severe dental disease and infection. Pus in the mouth and foul odor are usually the tell-tale signs. I would suggest getting financial assistance b/c this can be a huge undertaking to get a pets teeth cleaned and diseased teeth extracted, but this is the only way to correct it once the teeth are this far gone.
