My dog's back legs are dead weight after injury. Is she paralyzed?

Oh dear! This is a very serious problem - I'm afraid she really has to see a vet right away. She may have a herniated disc in her back causing the paralysis, or some other neurologic problem affecting her spinal cord. She may be in pain, or she may have no feeling at all in her rear legs - it's impossible to say without an exam. She needs immediate treatment to have a reasonable chance of regaining function in her rear legs, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do at home that will help her. Poor Turbena! I'm afraid this is very concerning. Loss of function in the rear legs is most often due to a "slipped" or herniated disc in the spine, but could also be due to some other neurologic problem or illness. This problem needs immediate treatment for the best chance of recovery, so I would recommend taking Turbena to the vet now. He/she can do a complete neurologic exam as well as x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment right away.

Ginger needs to be examined by the veterinarian quickly. It sounds like she is in pain. A sudden paralysis can indicate a spinal injury, a slipped disc, an infection in the spine or a cancer. She will need an exam and likely x-rays to know what can be done and so that she receives medicine to feel better. I hope she feels better quickly.

No, this isn't normal. I see that Gretchen in a Dachshund, and they can commonly have issues with their spine that come on suddenly. I would consider this a medical emergency, and she needs to see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. This sounds like she may have injured her back which is very serious and needs immediate veterinary attention. If she isn’t using her rear legs this may be temporary or if the nerves have been damaged she could become permanently paralyzed. Please take her in the treatment right away. They will give medication for the pain and to reduce the inflammation around the nerves. Dogs can rupture a disc in their back and may need surgery to relieve the pressure so they can walk again. If she was run over by a horse, your dog could have been severely injured by that even if she didn't show it at the time. The only way to know for sure if anything is broken is to have x-rays, and she could have had her spine, hips, or back legs severely damaged. It is a medical emergency that she can't walk or put weight on her hind legs, and she has to see a vet now. If you don't take her into a vet now, this could be permanent. Please take her into a vet now.

I doubt it is from the mass and could be from a slipped disk in her back. This is painful and can have neurologic signs: walking drunk, dragging legs, paresis or paralysis. If she loses deep pain in her legs the prognosis for return of motor function decreases. I recommend that Phoebe go to an emergency hospital or your Vet if open as soon as possible.
