My dog has babesiosis and low platelets. Will they drop further?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old

12 may he came positive with b.gibsoni and his platelets were 100000 after treatment for month till 12 June we again had blood work where his platelets come 202000 on 19 june 2018 but after month again on 24 July 2018 I thought to go for blood work once again so on 24 July again after month his platelets were low to 140000 from 202000 and he was still positive with b.gibsoni so my question is it's been more 14 days from last blood work and he is active and fine so can his platelets go low more?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

There is a possibility that the platelets could drop further. I’d have his platelets rechecked in 2 more weeks. If they are lower consider treating again.

I wish you the best!
