My dog had B. gibsoni. What's a normal platelet count and next steps?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 7 months old

He had b.gibsoni positive on 12 may last month his platelets were 1lakh after 14 days his platelets went down to 75000 then after every 1 week vet has done his platelets check where it came like 1 week 153000 2 week 155000 and last on 19 June his platelets came 202000 so what is the dogs normal platelets range and should I go for platelets check again or I should stop here I am confused what to do ? I am giving him GILOY water that helps in increasing platelets

Well it looks like he is making platelets again which is good, however B. gibsoni also attacks red blood cells so it is important to have him also checked for a red blood cell count. Since you are in contact with a veterinarian and are having blood tests done, listen to your veterinarian's recommendation on when to do follow up blood tests.

My dog has B. gibsoni but is healthy. Will he ever test negative?

Hello. As I said earlier, in some dogs B. gibsoni many NEVER clear the blood & will always test positive by PCR. This does not mean your dog has an active infection but total remission seldom occurs. There was a paper presented in 2017 where a dog was treated with clindamycin, doxycycline & metronidazole for 6 weeks, & was tested negative at 3 & 6 months after treatment was stopped, so you might want to discuss this with your veterinarian & see if this is possible for your pet. My dog had babesia. How long for his low platelets to increase?

Hello, the process of increasing his platelets is not that simply described or easy to predict. It sounds like his platelets were decreased due to the infection with Babesia. Therefore, if he has been undergoing treatment for his low platelets, then I would have expected that his number would've increased. Platelets are made in the bone marrow, and the turn around time can be within a day. The best way to truly tell if his platelets have improved is to have them checked with another cbc. Babesia is a red blood cell parasite that usually causes anemia but it can cause decreased platelets and kidney injury. My dog has Anaplasma. How long for low platelets to normalize?

I wish there were a set number of days to expect this to happen, but there just isn't. The body can respond very quickly and normalize platelets or increase platelets just about at any time. THe key is to recheck platelet levels every 2-4 weeks as well as monitoring him for any signs of toxicity (i.e. Lethargy, lack of appetite, spontaneous bleeding, respiratory distress, etc).
