My dog ate wall paint. Should I take him to the vet for lead?

While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. Signs of this would include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and/or diarrhea. You should do your best to reprimand Louie if you see him chewing the wall or furniture, and can even try some Bitter Apple spray to deter the chewing. I hope this helps and that all is well!

The good news is that from my research, Behr has never made a paint that contained lead pigment. Because it doesn't contain lead, it's much safer but you may see some mild GI upset from this ingestion in the form of vomiting. I can give you a home remedy for Tiger in case you do see vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. If Jordy did eat the dry wall by biggest concern would be possible obstruction if he swallowed a big piece instead of chewing it. However, as you know dry wall really crumbles and I suspect you would see evidence on the floor or in/ around his mouth if he has been messing around with it. I would monitor him for any signs of nausea or Vomiting. On the other hand you could be very proactive and have him seen at an ER today and have them induce vomiting to see if he vomits anything out. This is unlikely to cause any serious problems - it sounds like the berries are small enough that they should pass through the intestines without getting stuck, even in a small dog like Dorothy. I doubt very much that the paint would have been lead-based, as this is known to be such a hazard now for both children and pets - most lead-based paint is found in old houses, and is very rarely used for anything else anymore. As long as she is acting normal, I wouldn't worry - the berries should pass through her GI tract and pass harmlessly in her poop within 2-3 days. If she has any symptoms like repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating, it would be a good idea to have her seen for a check-up to make sure everything is okay.

Lead poisoning can cause very serious gastrointestinal and neurological damage if it goes untreated. Medications aimed at counteracting the lead as well as controlling the symptoms will be utilized. Commonly used drugs include Calcium-EDTA, pencillamine, and thiamine. Various cathartics may also be indicated depending upon when and how frequent the exposure has been. Hope this makes sense. Most important thing is not to wait and to get to the ER as soon as possible. Also you may want to establish an open case with the pet poison control hotline.

Oh no, that was naughty of Chloe! At this point, all you can do is monitor her. It wouldn't be recommended to induce her to vomit, as the wood could get caught in her esophagus or damage it on it's way out. The wood could cause some damage to her GI tract as it passes through and/or could cause an obstruction. Monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, blood in the vomit, lethargy, or constipation. Should you see any of those signs, I would take Chloe into a vet right away.

This is an emergency. If you suspect a pesticide you should call the pet poison control helpline. Otherwise, when I see older animals present this way through the ER I am very worried about abdominal bleeding from a tumor. I would not wait. He should be see by a vet ASAP.
