My dog ate his vomit with foreign material again. What to do?

If Rose has been vomiting today and is not eating, she should be examined by an ER vet and have abdominal x-rays performed. Some foreign material can linger in the stomach for quite awhile before either passing or causing an obstruction. Foreign body obstructions often require surgical intervention. However, if Rose only vomited once and is otherwise eating, drinking and acting normally, you may be able to monitor her at home for changes.

I'm sorry to hear that Spock has been having nausea and vomiting lately. Yes, it is possible that he still has more plastic or other foreign material in his stomach or intestines. Since he has been vomiting, it is concerning that he may have developed an intestinal obstruction from this foreign material. At this point, the best thing you can do is take Spock to his vet for an exam and he will also likely need abdominal x-rays to determine if an obstruction is suspected. Withhold food for the next 12-24 hours after his vomiting. I hope that all goes well!

It is possible if you switched Joys food suddenly it could cause vomiting and sever gastric upset. However if Joy is still not wanting to eat I would take her the vet for possibly a fecal and abdominal x-rays. It is possible Joy has parasites, severe gastritis or a foreign body blocking her intestines. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for 12-24 hours is small amounts. However, if Joy continues to vomit, not eat or acts lethargic he really should go to a vet

I would be concerned that it could cause Skye some GI upset such as vomiting. If it does, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hopefully Blue has vomited up all the material that he ingested. Unfortunately at this stage if there is anymore it has likely already passed into the gut. If so it may pass through without problem especially if the scraps are small. Over the next few days you need to be really vigilant, if it gets stuck in the gut signs you will be looking for are depression, pain, vomit and diarrhoea, not wanting to eat. Go to the vet right away if you suspect any of these.

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

Poor girl. Let her vomit. If she vomits up the particles well then that is a good thing. However if she tries to vomit and cannot produce anything, or if she continues to vomit liquids and refuses food, then this is concerning for a potential blockage and she should be taken to your vet right away. So monitor her for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of a blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), refusing food, few feces, +/- abdominal pain, and lethargy. If she doesn't have any of these symptoms and can keep her food down well, then she is likely to be just fine. However for the future you should try to keep these harmful things out of her reach, because puppies are very curious and will put almost anything in their mouths, not realizing how harmful they can be.
