Dog ate spicy wings, seems fine. What symptoms should I watch for?

My dog ate some spicy chicken wings but she seems fine. What should I look out for?

I would watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and inappetence. If any of these occur I recommend taking Indie to a veterinarian. She could develop pancreatitis from this or just a bad gastrointestinal upset.

If she ate any of the bone from the wings they typically dissolve in the stomach but sometimes can cause more harm.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She could develop signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. If she develops any vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

Sorry, somehow there was a glitch. It is quite possible that nothing untowards will happen and your dog can digest all without problems.

Hello. Just be on the look out for any intestinal discomfort, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. For the most part, the bones should be digested without a problem, so if Mabel has no problems over the next 2-3 days, she will be fine. This is a fairly common problem, unfortunately - dogs are good at getting into things that they shouldn't eat! I would expect that Charlie may have some mild GI upset for the next day or two (mild vomiting or diarrhea) - as long as he's active and eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't necessarily worry. There is a small chance that the bones could cause a blockage or an intestinal perforation - this is not common in my experience, but something to watch out for. Some dogs may also get serious illnesses like pancreatitis as a result of eating greasy "people food" like chicken wings. I would monitor Charlie closely for the next 24-48 hours - if he stops eating, has repeated episodes of vomiting, or diarrhea with blood in it then I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away in case of a serious problem.

I really don't know what medications you have available in Australia to give so I am not sure what to tell you to do. Usually symptoms from eating something like this are self-limiting, meaning after 24-48 hours they will resolve on their own. I just suggest you feed some plain white bread now if she will eat it - one or two slices. This may help prevent diarrhea and further GI upset. Then feed nothing else for 8-12 hours. Water is fine for her to have.

For the most part I recommend monitoring after chicken bone ingestion - while sometimes they can become lodged in the esophagus or the intestines, and they can also cause stomach upset, the majority of the time they don't cause any symptoms at all. Most dogs chew them into small pieces before ingesting them. If Neveah vomits, has a decrease in appetite, or develops diarrhea contact your vet right away.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, if there hasn’t been a problem for 48 hours, you’re in the clear. Continue feeding Indy as usual. If there is some diarrhea but Indy is still eating and playing and active, im still not terribly concerned. But if vomiting starts or you’re seeing lethargy or loss of appetite, it’s time to head in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Indy!

Brave girl! She may develop some vomiting and or diarrhea, as this food may cause some irritation to her GI tract. Offer her a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. I agree that she should be fine. Main things I would look for are vomiting, diarrhea, not eating and lethargy. If you notice any of these or any other abnormal signs I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet can do some bloodwork to ensure everything looks ok and give her fluids if needed.
