My puppy ate snake skin. Is it dangerous? Should I go to the vet?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fortunately this was a nonvenomous snake! It is possible that Snickers got bit and may have a small wound, especially if he is licking the area. I recommend trying to examine his foot and see if there are any visible wounds. If he continues to seem irritated by his foot, i.e. keeps licking it, for longer than a day, I would have him seen by your veterinarian. If he has a wound, it can be become infected and even abscessed (pocket of infected fluid), if left unmanaged. I hope this is helpful!

Snails are generally non toxic to dogs, but the problems come with with the parasites they carry, and if they have been poisoned with snail poisoning. Snails carry lungworms, which will be passed to dogs when the snail is eaten by the dog. Not all snails carry lungworms, so you can monitor Daisy for signs of coughing and difficulty breathing. If she develops those problems, you should take her into your vet. The snail's shell could also potentially cause GI obstruction or GI upset, but it's not too likely. Monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or extremely lethargy, and if you see any of those signs, take her into your vet. Finally, as I mentioned, there can be problems if the snail was poisoned with snail poisoning. Signs of toxicity from snail poisoning include tremors and twitching, which are exacerbated by noise. If you see any of those signs, you need to take Daisy into your vet right away. If she is actually normally, eating and drinking normally, and having normal bathroom habits, I would not worry about her.

Oh no, poor Trevor! If he was bitten by a Russell Viper, you would see extensive swelling and significant pain in the wound area. Given that it's been more than 24 hours and Trevor seems completely normal, I would suspect he hasn't been bitten by a viper. I would gently clean the wounds with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on him. Monitor the wounds for redness, swelling, pus, and warmth to the touch, indications of infection. Should you see any of those signs, take him into the vet for antibiotics. If Trevor does develop any swelling, becomes lethargic, stops eating, and starts vomiting, I would take him into a vet right away. Hopefully, however, he will be just fine :-)

If she was bitten by a poisonous snake, then it would be obvious by now. The first sign is a great amount of swelling at the site of the bite. It would also cause her to be very depressed and she may start to have dark red gums and blood in her urine. This would all be apparent by now. If she is acting fine and there is no swelling, then there's little need to worry. She may have been bit by a non- poisonous snake. If you see a bite mark, then it's important to flush the wound well with normal water for ten minutes once a day until healed. If you do happen to notice swelling at the bite area, or other signs of illness illness, then you should take her to the vet immediately for treatment. I hope that helps and all is well with Ivy.

Unless your dog ate a Mexican beaded lizard, you do not have to worry. If he indeed ate a Mexican Alligator Lizard (Abronia), it was a nice but harmless snack. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bluey! I am glad that Bluey is doing ok at 2 days post snake bite. The prognosis is fair to good with early intervention (antivenom, hospitalization). I think he prognosis is guarded with out Veterinary care. In one study, 8/11 affected dogs survived to discharge, with a median hospital stay of 4.5 days. Clinical signs can last for 1-1.5 weeks, and full recovery may take months as neurologic receptors regenerate. Even if she doesn't receive the antivenom, administration of appropriate supportive care is very important. Clip and clean the wound. Broad spectrum antibiotics may be indicated for 7-10 days if infection and localized tissue damage/necrosis are present at the bite location. Although the mouths of snakes contain a multitude of bacteria, prophylactic antibiotics are not warranted for most bites. Clinical signs can be delayed, with American snakes it can be 10-18 hours. Clinical signs are primary neurologic, respiratory, and cardiovascular in nature. They may include hypersalivation, vomiting, diarrhea, ataxia, depression/decreased mentation, ascending flaccid quadriplegia (curare-like syndrome, decreased spinal reflexes), muscle fasciculations, reduced nociception, hypothermia, anisocoria, dyspnea, tachypnea, tachycardia, cardiac ventricular arrhythmias, cranial nerve deficits (e.g. decreased pupillary light, gag and swallow reflexes), weakness, and respiratory depression. Evidence of coagulopathy (e.g. hematuria, hematochezia) can also occur. Aspiration pneumonia is a potential complicating factor. Death is possible and is usually secondary to respiratory paralysis. My best recommendation is to seek Veterinary Care, but I understand your situation. The best thing to do is watch her closely and hope for the best! I hope this helps and I wish Bluey the best!

The toxic components in tulips is concentrated in the bulb but is also present (in less concentrated amounts) in the other parts of the plant as well. I think Rocky will be fine but symptoms you would see would be associated with irritation of the mouth and esophagus: drooling and maybe vomiting. If you didn't do so already, flush out his mouth really well. If vomiting occurs I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rocky the best!
