My dog ate a skunk and is vomiting. When should I call the vet?

It is unlikely the skunk caused any problems for your dog. Oher than the foul odor, skunk musk is unlikely to cause any lasting health problems. It has been reported to cause anemia from damage to the red blood cells but this is an effect you would be seen within days after exposure, not months. Ask for a follow up with your veterinarian. Discuss your concerns about his weight loss, and the chronic vomiting/diarrhea. In addition to a physical examination, they may recommend additional tests such as bloodwork, urinalysis, and imaging of the body.

If you notice any of these symptoms you should take your dog to your local vets as an emergency. Typically, the symptoms of food intoxication commence within 2-6 hrs after ingestion. Inducing vomiting in dogs that ate bones is never recommended as it pose a risk of esophageal tear from the sharp bones. Salmonellosis is a potential risk after eating decomposing food, however, Salmonella infection is not common in dogs in general. Typically, the symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

I would be concerned that it could cause Skye some GI upset such as vomiting. If it does, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Anal glands may need to be emptied and it would be good to ensure that there is no abscess formation that may be making them smell more than usual. Also, they can look into what is causing his vomiting. Possible reasons for vomiting include foreign body ingestion and obstruction, dietary indiscretion and pancreatitis, among others. It could be due to dietary indiscretion or even more concerning due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. The fact that Bailey ate dinner and did not vomit makes me think that it is less likely for this to be an obstruction though if the vomiting resumes or he stops eating, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Not sure what he actually ate since there are many different waxing products out there. I would advise that if the vomiting doesn't resolve or worsens over the next 6-12 hours, you should take him to a veterinarian and get him evaluated. The ingestion of this product could cause a lot of irritation and a possible foreign body in the stomach or intestinal tract. Your vet can gather a thorough history (more about the product) and examine him. Once that is done, a treatment plan can be outlined. I hope the vomiting stops soon and Sonec returns to normal. Your Dog needs to be seen again by your veterinarian and more investigations are required to understand what is going on. The signs you are describing are compatible with an respiratory tract infection. Chest radiographs and antibiotics are required as soon as possible.
