My dog accidentally ate sildenafil. What symptoms should I watch for?

Viagra (sildenafil) is sometimes used ["off-label"](https://www.petcoach.co/article/veterinarians-allowed-to-prescribe-extra-label-drugs/) in veterinary medicine to treat pulmonary [hypertension](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/hypertension-in-cats-and/). Dogs were used in the original safety studies for Viagra, so it's considered pretty safe for them. The upper limit of the published dose for an 11lb dog would be about 15mg given orally 2 to 3 times daily. The dose ingested would be considered an overdose. You may see a rapid heart rate, and possibly weakness from a drop in blood pressure. If you see any abnormal activity such as weakness, collapse, etc. please seek veterinary attention right away.

I think Gibbs more than likely will be okay. Nitroglycerin tablets are not very bioavailable when ingested since they are intended to be held under the tongue and absorbed through the mouth. If Gibbs quickly swallowed one it might not affect him at all. If it sat in his mouth some could become absorbed, and in that case it would affect him pretty quickly. The main side effect would be low blood pressure which might not be very obvious at home, although you could see weakness or lethargy. The dose for dogs is 0.5mg per kg. Enalapril comes in 2.5mg tablets so did Charlie eat 2.5mg or 0.25mg? If he only at 0.25mg he probably will have no ill effects. If he ate 2.5mg then he could have some side effects. Things to watch out for: low blood pressure, increased urination, decreased appetite, vomiting, sudden lethargy or weakness.

Hello. I would not be concerned. All of these prodcts have been rigourously tested & significant overdoses are a routine part of this testing. Often, 5x the regular dose will be given for weeks & no adverse effects are noted. So a small onetime overdose that your little schnauzer got will not bother her one bit. This is actually a quite safe dose and should not cause severe side effects as long as Jet is not taking any other medication and is healthy otherwise. It can cause lower blood pressure and increased urination. I would monitor him for the next 12-24 hours and if you notice any abnormal sign like no urination, increased thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy (and any other sign), I would recommend an immediate check up.
