My dog ate sharp plastic. Will it pass or should I induce vomiting?

No do not make him vomit. The sharp pieces can do damage coming back up, as well as you can get esophageal irritation if you use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. I recommend feeding moistened kibble to help surround the pieces so hopefully they will pass without causing a problem. This can be serious though so if there is discomfort, no poop, or not eating I recommend taking an X-ray tomorrow see where the pieces are in the intestinal tract. If Jose is not painful they can take a series of X-rays over time to see if the pieces are moving. If they get stuck in one place then surgical removal will be needed. I never recommend including vomiting at home because the substance used at home causes esophagitis and gastritis, often worse than the initial problem. Plus, the shoe could become stuck in his esophagus, leading to a very serious situation. You can take him into a vet now to have vomiting safely induced with a shot, or you can chose to monitor him. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, anorexia, or lethargy, he should see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

If you see any of these symptoms in the next 24-48hrs, you should take Rayne to your local vets as an emergency. However, if she chewed the plastic into small pieces, most likely she will pass it with her stools and she will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

If she swallowed it whole then it could pass in her stool, she could vomit it up on her own or it could becomes stuck and cause a blockage. It is best, if swallowed whole and it just happened, to take her to the Vet right away and have them induce vomiting. We do not recommend hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Signs of a blockage are vomiting, not eating and lethargy. I hope this helps!

Vomiting should not be induced if a dog ate anything sharp. I suggest you feed him a slice or two of bread to help "coat" the earrings so they don't cause any trauma to the GI tract and push them through. If they were small they should pass on their own. If you are worried, you could always take him for an x-ray now to confirm. It could ease your mind.

You may see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or difficulty defecating. If the pieces are small enough, they could pass uneventfully in the next 24-36 hours. If your dog becomes symptomatic, an exam with your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER would be strongly recommended.

It depends. Even with small objects, there is always the risk of intestinal obstruction. If going to the vet now for induction of vomiting is not an option, I recommend that you feed several slices of plain bread as sometimes this will bulk things up and aid in natural passage.
