My dog ate raccoon feces. Is he in danger? What should I look for?

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 28 lbs

I took hachi to our backyard and he ate something that look like raccoon feces. I'm not sure what raccoon feces look like but after I did some research online, dogs can get raccoon roundworms from eating the feces. Is hachi in danger? I will take a picture of the feces and can you please tell me if it is raccoon feces? Unfortunately I don't the money for a vet visit right now but what should I look out for?

It's difficult to say if this is raccoon feces for sure from the picture, but if it is, raccoons can carry a form of roundworm, and it can be harmful to dogs and humans. Even if it is not raccoon feces, other types of wildlife can also carry parasites that can be harmful to dogs and humans. I recommend calling your vet to get dewormer for Hachi right away. Your vet may also recommend an appointment to have Hachi examined and running a fecal test on him to check and see if he has any parasites. If this is not an option I recommend seeing if you can get an over the counter dewormer that is labeled for dogs and giving it as per the label directions. If you notice diarrhea or vomiting, or worms in Hachi's stool, I recommend seeing a vet right away, as these could be signs that Hachi has intestinal parasites. Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up Hachi's stool to reduce the risk of infection.

My dog eats poop & everything on walks. Is he okay? What can I do?

I would make sure Hachi is up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he is not. He could get worms from eating another dog's poop, which is why giving him a deworming treatment is important. Other than that, he should be fine. When you walk him and you see poop on the sidewalk, steer him away from it or distract him by making him do a trick like sit and then rewarding him with a treat. I would also pick up his poop right after he goes to keep him from eating it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My dog ate wild animal poop. Is it dangerous? What should I do now?

I do not think you need to induce vomiting. the poop will get digested. Usually this is not dangerous, however there is a possibility that your dog may get some indigestion, ie maybe vomiting or diarrhea which would be due to bacteria your dog is not used to. If that is the case, you may want to withhold feed for about 12-24 hrs, then feed rice and some chicken and then slowly introduce his normal feed.

My dog tries to approach a raccoon in the yard. Is it dangerous?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Tipper. So yes, this can be worrying. Raccoons can carry serious diseases like rabies and distemper. You need to keep her away from the raccoon. Call your local animal control to come and trap this raccoon. Oftentimes, if the raccoon is visible during the day and lets animals approach it, that is a sign it's sick. Also make sure Tipper is up to date on her vaccines like her DHPPi combination shot and rabies. I hope this helps!

My dog ate rabbit poop. Should I worry about sickness or giardia?

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Frederich's problems. There is a slight chance of course that the giardia organism may be present in the feces as it is though to be part of the normal gut flora of the rabbits, but that species of giardia usually doesn't effect dogs. Dogs can get tapeworms if they eat the entire rabbit. However, like giardia, most of the parasites the rabbits carry are species specific to them. I would just watch Frederich for any gastrointestinal upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea as rabbit poop is not a normal part of his diet (or so we hope but who knows if hes sneaking some behind your back ;) ) and it may give him a bellyache. My dog mouthed animal poop, didn't eat it. Is a vet visit needed?

Dogs do like to eat feces, which is very very gross! If Chichi did not eat it and was only in her mouth for seconds, then you very likely have nothing to worry about and I wouldn't bring her into the vet if she is showing no symptoms. Make sure she is up to date on her leptospirosis vaccine, as rats are a vector for lepto (it's passed through urine but there may have been urine around the droppings. There is also a concern that rat poisoning can be present in the feces, thus transmitting it to your dog. If she did not eat it, the risk is pretty much non-existent but signs to look out for include bleeding from the mouth or nose, abnormally colored gums and tongue, difficulty breathing, signs of pain, rapid heart beat, bloody vomit, and bloody diarrhea. If you see any of those signs, take Chichi into the vet immediately. Otherwise, she should be fine. I hope this helps :-)
