My dog ate my prednisone. What symptoms should I look out for?

A 10mg tablet for a 48lb (0.48mg/lb) dog would not be expected to create any complications (dosages as high as 4mg/lb are used in emergency and severe cases). She may have an increased thirst but otherwise is unlikely to have any ill effects. Continue to monitor just in case, any vomiting/diarrhea/bloody stool should be reported to your vet

You will need to monitor him, such an overdose is likely to cause gastrointestinal problems, possibly an ulcer in the stomach. i would recommend skipping the next couple doses of prednisone as well. if you see dark stools, bloody diarrhea, vomiting or severe lethargy you will need to take diamond to the vet ASAP.

This dose will suppress his immune system in addition to all of the side effects that you are noticing at home. Steroids will cause panting, increased thirst, urination and hunger. Some dogs will experience skin and coat changes, muscle weakness/ loss and gastrointestinal ulcers in rare cases. Doses this high are only used to treat severe life threatening conditions. I recommend contacting his veterinarian today to discuss his treatment plan. Typically the steroids are tapered once the primary disease is under control. There are other immunosuppressive drugs available that may have less side effects. Perhaps he would do better on a different medication. No, I would not recommend doing this. Sidewinder has been on prednisone for quite a long time, and skipping days should not be done. He does have to be weaned off of it slowly, and I would not do this without veterinary supervision. I would try to wrap it in some cheese or peanut butter to get him to eat it. I would also have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. Long term prednisone use can cause GI ulcers, and that could be the cause of his bloody diarrhea. Because he's having bloody diarrhea and not eating, I would take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now. That vet can advise you on what to do with the prednisone as well (bring the bottle with you to the appointment).

I normally do not exceed 60mg daily regardless of the size of the dog just because of the potential side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding as well as the undesirable side effects you describe. I recommend you bring up your concerns to the prescribing veterinarian who knows the case well, to taper his dose down slowly. It is important to not discontinue or lower too much this medication acutely as problems can arise with this approach. For now, look for any evidence of gastrointestinal bleeding such as black, tarry stools. If observed, let your veterinarian know right away. Good luck with your boy!
