My dog ate a plastic fork. What should I do? Is a vet visit needed?

This is a small piece, and it should pass without problem. Keep an eye on Molly, and if you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the feces, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would worry and have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Uh-oh, naughty Chloe! I definitely recommend taking Chloe directly in to the nearest vet - time is of the essence. There are lots of variables that will factor into how concerned I would be about this, including the size of the lid pieces, and thickness/firmness of the plastic. I recommend you bring Chloe directly in to the vet while the swallowed material is still in her stomach, and bring the honey jar and the remains of the lid so the vet can see what sort of material they're dealing with and how much Chloe ate. Your vet can then decide with you what the best course of action is. The may want to start with x-rays if they think the plastic material is thick enough to show up, to make sure it's still in the stomach. If I am very concerned that a swallowed foreign material may cause a problem, I will sometimes either induce vomiting (if it can be done safely) or consider immediate surgical removal of the foreign material (if inducing vomiting may not be safe due to sharp edges of the foreign material). In other cases, it may be an option to simply wait with the hopes that Chloe will pass the material out in her stool without any issue, and monitor her closely for any symptoms that might indicate the plastic material isn't passing. However, even if you end up going this route, I'd still absolutely recommend doing so with a vet's guidance, and they may want to put Chloe on GI protectants to minimize the risk of irritation as it passes. No do not make him vomit. The sharp pieces can do damage coming back up, as well as you can get esophageal irritation if you use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. I recommend feeding moistened kibble to help surround the pieces so hopefully they will pass without causing a problem. This can be serious though so if there is discomfort, no poop, or not eating I recommend taking an X-ray tomorrow see where the pieces are in the intestinal tract. If Jose is not painful they can take a series of X-rays over time to see if the pieces are moving. If they get stuck in one place then surgical removal will be needed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the pieces are very small they will likely pass through the GI tract and come out in her stool. If you are concerned that the pieces are big and it just happened contact a vet to discuss inducing vomiting. They can decide if the pieces are too big to be thrown up. Otherwise watch for lethargy, belly pain, vomit and not wanting to eat as that can be symptoms of a blockage. I wish Mazzy the best!

Just monitor her over the next 24-48 hours for any vomiting, lethargy, not eating. If you notice any of those then take her to your vet for an exam.

Walk him so you can monitor his stool out put and you can confirm that the piece of jean material passed in the stool. If he stops eating or vomits then he should be seen by your Vet for an exam and a belly X-ray to see if the fabric is causing an obstruction. I wish Koda the best!
